SELL, Brice, sixth of eight children of
Daniel and Rachel (née Detwiler) Sell, members of the Church of the Brethren,
was born at Leamersville, (Pa.). July 23, 1847. He was reared on the farm, attended the common schools and,
during manhood, taught several terms of public school, and made his living
farming, horticulturing and trucking.
He was united in marriage with Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and
Catherine (née Hanley) Burns, members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, living
at East Freedom, the union being solemnized by George W. Brumbaugh, September
27, 1868. When about eighteen years
old, the bride had united with her parents' church. About two years after her marriage, she joined the Church of the
Brethren, in the Leamersville congregation.
To this union were born nine children,-Daniel, Lovinia, Stephen,
Nathaniel and Emanuel (twins), Simon (deceased), Edgar, Minnie (deceased), and
Orvella. He united with the Church of
the Brethren, in the Duncansville (now Carson Valley) congregation, in his
early manhood. This congregation called
him to the ministry, September 19, 1872; and, through the laying on of hands by
Thomas B. Maddocks and John L. Holsinger, had him ordained, in 1899. At the organization of the Carson Valley
congregation, in 1904, he was chosen bishop, which position he filled till June
4, 1908. He often represented his
congregation at District Meeting, and served on the Standing Committee at York,
(Pa.), in 1921. He dedicated the First
Albright Church and the Snake Spring Valley house,--taught in the Sunday-school
about fifty years, started the Bennington Mission, not far from Galitzin. From about 1900 to 1913 he went, every four
weeks, into Indiana County, to look after the spiritual welfare of the church
there. He held evangelistic meetings in
many congregations in Pennsylvania and other States. He was uncompromisingly strong on the temperance issue; served
Middle District of Pennsylvania on its Temperance Committee for a number of
years. While marketing in Altoona, (Pa.), September 9, 1922, he met his death
in an automobile accident. Funeral was
conducted by Galen B. Royer. Subject,
"Gaining a Crown." Texts,
Luke 16:10; Matthew 25:21. Interment in
Carson Valley Cemetery.

REV. BRICE SELL IS MOTOR VICTIM
Well-Known Minister of Church of
Brethren and Freedom Township Citizen Killed in Ninth Ward.
HE IS THROWN UNDER TRUCK WHICH RUNS AWAY
Is Native of Blair County, 75 Years Old,
and Death Occurs Just One Year After That of Son.
Rev. Brice Sell, a minister of the
church of the Brethren, and a retired farmer, residing in Freedom township,
west of Leamersville, was fatally injured this morning at 10.45 o'clock, in a motor
accident on Oak avenue, between Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh streets, death
ensuing on the ambulance as he was being taken to the Altoona hospital.
Mr. Sell is the father of D.M. Sell, the
well known grocer at Fourth avenue and Third streets and lived on the homestead
in Freedom township with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Leonard. He came to the city this morning with a load of produce on a truck and
the fatal accident occurred while he was engaged in making sales along Oak avenue.
Persons who saw the accident say that he
stepped on the running board of the truck, took hold of the steering wheel and
started the car, but at the same moment a front wheel struck a stone and the
car was swerved to the side, while he was thrown off and caught by a rear wheel
and dragged for some distance until the truck struck a telephone pole.
Help Comes Quickly.
Mr. Sell was well known in that
neighborhood, as his daughter, Mrs. Conrad Powell, now living at 610
Twenty-fifth street, formerly lived there. Assistance was quickly given and it
was at once apparent that he was seriously injured and he lapsed into
unconsciousness within a short time. The son, D.M. Sell, and Mrs. Powell, were
notified by telephone of the accident and they arrived before the ambulance and
accompanied their father to the hospital and were thus with him when he passed
away.
Examination revealed that he was injured
internally about the body and that the injury was bound to prove fatal.
Although 75 years old, Mr. Sell was an active, vigorous man. He had been
driving motor cars for some years, but was probably unused to handling the
truck with which he met death today.
The son and daughter, following his
death, drove to the parental home to break the news to their mother and to bring
her to Altoona. The body will be prepared for burial here and later taken to
the home.
Son Killed a Year Ago.
The tragic death of Mr. Sell occurs just
one year after that of his son, Simon O. Sell, a Pittsburgh division conductor,
who was killed on Sept. 11, 1921, while in the discharge of his duties with his
train in the vicinity of Conemaugh.
Rev. Brice Sell was born July 24, 1847,
being a son of Daniel and Rachel Sell, and a grandson of Abraham Sell, who was
one of the pioneers of Blair county. He received his education in the public
schools of his native district, in Freedom township, and when he grew to young
manhood he taught school for several terms. The greater part of his life was
spent in farming and he lived in Freedom township practically all his life.
He was elected to the ministry of the
Church of the Brethren when a young man and throughout his life was actively
engaged in church work, being identified with the Leamersville and Carson
Valley churches, and also in years gone by, he frequently preached in the
churches in this city. He was a man of considerable oratorical ability and
enjoyed a wide popularity as a preacher. He was never a salaried minister,
however.
He was married in young manhood to
Elizabeth Burns, who survives him, [along with] three sons and two daughters,
D.M. and Mrs. Conrad Powell of this city, Stephen H. of Roaring Spring, Mrs.
Arvilla Leonard, who lives at the old homestead, and Edgar, also of Freedom
township.
He is also survived by three brothers,
Daniel D. of Plattsburg, Mo., and James A. and Simon of Freedom township, Blair
county.

MERCHANT EXPIRES AT HUNTING CAMP
Daniel M. Sell, Member of the Altoona
School Board, Dies at Breezewood After Suffering Heart Attack.
Stricken with a heart attack at a
hunting camp south of Breezewood, in Fulton county, shortly after noon
yesterday, Daniel M. Sell, aged 66, of 128 East Third avenue, prominent
merchant and member of the Altoona school board, died soon afterwards.
With several companions he left his home
on Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock and went to the hunting camp, located
between Breezewood and Hancock, Md. To all appearances he was in good health
and the attack came upon him suddenly and he lived but a short time, expiring
at 2.15 o'clock. The body was brought to his home last evening and arrangements
made for the funeral, which will be held on Monday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock.
Daniel Monroe Sell was born on Sept. 18,
1869, at Leamersville, a son of Rev. Brice and Elizabeth (Burns) Sell, both
deceased. He grew up on the farm, attended the village school and in his young
manhood embarked on his life career, that of merchandising. He was first
employed in the McMaster store in Newry, then he came to Altoona and worked in
the D.M. McFarlin store which he subsequently acquired and he was actively
engaged in business for a period of thirty-five years, his store being located
at Fourth avenue and Third street. He was also engaged in contracting and other
business activities.
Four years ago Mr. Sell was elected a
member of the city school board for a four-year term. At the recent primary
election he was renominated for the office on the Republican ticket and his
name will thus appear on the official ballot at the election next Tuesday. He
gave the city a conscientious service as a member of the board.
A lifelong member of the Church of the
Brethren, he held his membership in the Twenty-eighth Street church. He took an
active part in the various activities of the church. He was a member of the
Providence society of the church, serving as its president for a period of
twenty-five years and he was a deacon for about thirty years.
Mr. Sell also served as a member of the
National Council of Men's Work, a Church of the Brethren organization, and was
president of the Middle Pennsylvania district branch of this body. An ardent
church worker all his life, he took an active part in Sunday school work and he
served as president of the Men's Bible class of the Twenty-eighth Street church
school.
Mr. Sell was married twice. In 1896 he
married Nancy Alice Dilling of Clover Creek. After her death he was married on
Sept. 19, 1906, to Susannah Dilling of Saxton. Five children were born to the
first marriage, including the late Dr. Byron M. Sell, who died about one year
ago under circumstances similar to the passing of the father. Dr. Sell suffered
a heart attack while hunting, but he rallied and was brought home, dying
shortly afterwards at Mercy hospital, of which institution he was a staff
physician.
The surviving children are as follows:
Mrs. Lorna Geisinger of Altoona, Mrs. Agnes Miller of Leamersville, Mary A.
Sell of Altoona, Mrs. Annetta Ross of Altoona, Mrs. Cordina Macready and Mrs.
Kathryn S. Boland of Altoona and Mrs. Olive Underkloffler of White Plains, N.Y.
He is also survived by one brother,
Stephen H. Sell of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Gloria Lovenia Powell, wife
of Conrad Powell of this city, and Mrs. Arvilla Leonard of Freedom township. He
was a nephew of Rev. James A. Sell of Hollidaysburg and his descendants include
fifteen grandchildren.
The funeral service on Monday afternoon
will be held in the First Church of the Brethren. The officiating ministers
will be Rev. Walter Scott Long, pastor of the First church, and Rev. Glenn
Norris, pastor of the Twenty-eighty Street church. Interment will be made in
Rose Hill cemetery.
