The Johnstown, PA, "Daily Tribune" issue of [ ] Jan 1937:

MRS. WONDERLEY OF DALE EXPIRES IN HER 92ND YEAR

Dale Woman Was Oldest Member of Franklin St. M.E. Church

BURIAL ON FRIDAY

Husband Civil War Vet; Descendants of Four Generations Survive

[Note: Mrs. Wonderley's true name was Helen M. (Colbert) Wonderley. It says so from census records to siblings' obituaries to her own death certificate. We are not sure why she was called "Mary Maretha" in this obituary.]

Mrs. Mary Maretha (Colbert) Wonderley, 91, the oldest member of the Franklin Street Methodist Church, died yesterday afternoon at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Lester R. Dull of 308 Strayer Street, Dale. The aged woman was the widow of William H. Wonderley, Civil War veteran. Surviving her are descendants of four generations.

The nonagenarian's demise terminated an illness of several years. Although bedfast for that period of time she was in possession of all her faculties and had an excellent retentive memory.

Mrs. Wonderley's husband passed away December 20, 1906. He served two enlistments during the civil conflict and was held a prisoner for more than six months in a Southern prison camp. He was a member of Company I, 55th Infantry, Pennsylvania Volunteers.

Funeral Friday.

Funeral services for the nonagenarian will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Dull home by Rev. Dr. William K. Anderson, pastor of the Franklin Street charge. Burial will take place in Benshoff Cemetery, under the direction of Stephen J. Conway, Main Street mortician.

Mrs. Wonderley was born in Virginia June 29, 1845, a daughter of Robert and Rebekah (Witherow) Colbert. She came to this locality with her parents when a young woman. The family settled in Cambria Furnace, West Taylor Township.

The Dale woman at an early age became affiliated with the Cooper Avenue Methodist Church, but later transferred her membership to the Franklin Street congregation.

Honored by Church.

The nonagenarian was one of three persons presented with canes by members of the downtown Sunday school. The custom was started in 1935 when the three oldest members of the congregation were given the canes. Upon the demise of a possessor the cane is passed on to the next oldest person in the charge.

Mary Maretha Colbert and William H. Wonderley were married February 22, 1864, in the Martinsburg Methodist Church by Rev. Mr. Lape, then rector.

Surviving Mrs. Wonderley are a daughter, Mrs. A.N. Motter of East Pittsburgh, and four grandchildren -- Mrs. Lester R. Dull, with whom she made her home; Mrs. James H. McDowell of East Pittsburgh, H.A. Motter of Duncansville and Mrs. Albert Reffner of Blacklick. Mrs. Wonderley also leaves four great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

OBITUARY [probably from The Johnstown "Tribune"]

W.H. Wonderly, a prominent Grand Army man of Johnstown died at 6 o'clock this morning [20 Dec 1906-ed.] at the Wonderly home, No. 987 Bedford Street, Walnut Grove. He was sixty-three years. He had never been well since being in the army in 1865 but was able to be about until within the past two days. The cause of his death is said to have been traceable to an injury in a railroad wreck while being transferred from Andersonville Prison to Savannah, Ga. by the Confederates.
Mr. Wonderly served two enlistments in the Rebellion, the first from August 1862, to May 1863 in Company I, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, under Capt. William E. Johnston, and the second in Company I, Fifty-fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. This enlistment was for three years. He was with Ames' Division when it met Terry's Division at Drury's Bluff near Richmond in May 1864 and was captured there together with a number of other members of the Fifty-fifth Regiment [unclear] in Johnstown. Mr. Wonderly was a prisoner for six months and four days. From Drury's Bluff he was taken to Libby Prison, from there to Andersonville and later to Savannah, having had his back badly injured in the railroad wreck already referred to. He was paroled in December and was a patient at the hospital in Annapolis for a while before returning home. Mr. Wonderly was unable to accompany the ex-prisoners of war in the dedication of the monument erected by the State of Pennsylvania at Andersonville last December in memory of the large number of Pennsylvanians who lost their lives there during the struggle.
The deceased was a son of William and Susan Wonderly, deceased, and was born and reared in Blair County, this State. The date of his birth was June 12, 1844. He and Miss Helen Colbert were married at Roaring Spring, Blair County, soon after the war and since then they have made their home in Johnstown. A few years ago Mr. Wonderly sold peanuts from a stand at the corner of Main and Bedford streets, disposing of his wagon three years ago.
Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by a daughter, Rhuey, wife of Andrew Motter, of Monongahela City; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Weimer, of the Thirteenth Ward, and Mrs. Nina Boose, of Huntingdon; two brothers, Samuel and David Wonderly, also of Huntingdon County, and by four grandchildren, Mrs. James McDoel, Miss Daisy Ferrier, and Harry and Agnes Motter.
The funeral will take place at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, interment to be made in Benshoff's Cemetery in West Taylor Township.
W.H. Wonderly was a member of Emory Fisher Post 30, Grand Army of the Republic.
