AGED WOMAN KILLED WHILE
WALKING ON THE P.R.R. TRACKS
Unable to Hear Train, Mrs.
Susan Duncan Was Run Down Near Ladder Works This Morning.
THE BODY BADLY MUTILATED
Being somewhat deaf and
unable to hear even the shrill alarm sounded by Engineer Al. Wagle, Mrs. Susan Duncan, aged 79, was run down and almost
instantly killed by the 11 o'clock train this morning, while she was passing
the Indiana Ladder Works plant en-route to the home of her grandson, Charles
Duncan, who lives in Mrs. Sue Williard's home. The
remains of the unfortunate woman were not identified for almost an hour and the
persons who recognized the corpse at Undertaker John F. Steving's
were Charles and Frank Duncan, grandsons of the deceased, who are clerks in the
Indiana postoffice.
Mrs. Duncan arrived here
Tuesday evening from Johnstown, where she had spent several weeks with her
daughter, Mrs. Lydia Bonner. She spent the night with the family of W.M. Mahan,
of Wayne avenue, and was walking up the railroad to visit the Duncan home when
the train overtook her. Near the carriage plant travelers are compelled to walk
on the passenger track as a siding enters the factory at that point. Mrs.
Duncan was walking the ties when Engineer Wagle, who
is compelled to run with a full head of steam because of the grade there, saw
her and blew the whistle. Despite repeated warnings the woman did not step into
the ditch and the engineer reversed the throttle and tried to stop the
locomotive.
His efforts were of no
avail, however, and Mrs. Duncan was struck and pulled under the wheels. She was
dragged about 125 feet before the engine could be stopped. Fireman William
Sweeney was the first to leave the cab, and when he reached the front of the
engine he found that the aged woman had been pulled under and almost back to
the tender. Railroad Detective C.W. Burns, of Blairsville, who was a passenger,
soon joined Mr. Sweeney and they removed the lifeless form from its position
under the engine and carried the remains to the baggage car. The train then
resumed its trip and when the local depot was reached the body was removed to
John F. Steving's undertaking rooms.
At the undertaking room it
was found that Mrs. Duncan died from a fractured skull. Her left ear was cut
off, her right leg was ground off at the knee and her chest was slightly
crushed, several ribs being broken. Her black dress was but slightly torn. The
face is marked but little. Two small old-fashioned hand satchels she carried
were hurled aside and were intact when found.
Railroad and town
officials, physicians and prominent merchants were summoned to Steving's to view the remains. No identification was made,
however, for almost an hour and a few rumors of certain aged deaf persons being
killed were soon spread. At noon Coroner James S. Hammers, who had been on the
scene since the fatality, reached the Messrs. Duncan, and they positively
identified the woman as their grandmother.
In the meantime scores of
persons had visited the scene, which is in front of Justice John P. Elkin's
home. The course of the body as it was dragged by the engine from one rail to
the other across the "six foot" was traced. The marks indicate that
the remains were picked up in front of the home of J.W. Thompson.
By a singular coincidence,
George Duncan, mail carrier in the Third ward, was near the Normal School when
the accident occurred. When Mrs. W.D. Bash informed him that the body had not
been identified, he expressed the fear that she might have been his
grandmother, as Mrs. Duncan was to have reached the Williard
residence in time for dinner.
There Mrs. William Duncan,
of White township, awaited her and in the afternoon they were to go to the
Duncan farm.
Alonzo Lewis was on School street
when the fatality occurred. Being opposite the home of Rev. W.J. Wilson he had
a clear view of the accident. He says the passenger engine whistle was sounded
several times and that Mrs. Duncan did not appear to hear it.
The funeral of Mrs. Duncan
will probably be held on Friday. The family pastor, Rev. Dr. J. Day Brownlee,
of the First United Presbyterian church, will conduct the obsequies.
Mrs. Bonner, the only child
of the deceased, is expected here from Johnstown tonight.
Coroner Hammers has secured
a jury and will hold an inquest this evening.
This accident is the first
fatality on the branch within the town limits in the memory of the present
generation. Some years ago a man was killed while on the car steps at the stock
yards, but no one remembers any person's being run down.

NO PERSON HELD FOR MRS.
DUNCAN'S DEATH
Coroner Hammers Made An
Official Investigation of the Case.
FUNERAL IN U.P. CHURCH
Rev. Brownlee Will Conduct
the Services There Tomorrow Morning.
SPENT HER LIFE IN COUNTY
The employes
of the Indiana Branch train were exonerated from all blame by a jury empaneled by Coroner James S. Hammers to inquire into the
death of Mrs. Susan Duncan, who was killed by the 11 o'clock train Wednesday
morning while she was walking on the railroad tracks near the Indiana Carriage
Works.
Dr. Hammers conducted the
inquest at the undertaking rooms of John F. Steving
on Wednesday evening. His jury consisted of the following -- Messrs. James Dodds, James A. Taylor, Charles Alter, Scott Geesy, Harry Yuckenberg and
Benjamin Kellar.
Witnesses testified that
Mrs. Duncan, who was hard of hearing, was walking ahead of the train and
probably did not hear the whistle, and that engineer Al. Wagle
stopped the train within a length of itself, thus showing that he had the
locomotive under control. The jury therefore decided that Mrs. Duncan met an
accidental death and that the railroad men were not responsible.
Friends of the victim are
unable to explain her presence on the railroad as she had frequently expressed
great fear of the tracks. She was to have accompanied her granddaughter from
W.M. Mahan's to Charles Duncan's that fateful forenoon, but sent the young
woman ahead to make some purchases, declaring she could make the trip alone.
On Wednesday evening the
remains were conveyed to the Duncan homestead in White township. At 10 o'clock
Friday morning they will be taken to the First United Presbyterian church,
where Mrs. Duncan's pastor, Rev. J. Day Brownlee, will conduct the obsequies.
The interment follows in the family lot in Greenwood cemetery.
Mrs. Duncan, whose maiden
name was Walker, was born in West Lebanon about 79 years ago. She married
George Duncan and for several years they lived in Penn Run. later the family
located in White township and there George Duncan died about 15 years ago. The
mother remained on the farm with her son, William, the father of Messrs.
Charles, George and Frank Duncan, employes in the
Indiana postoffice. She also frequently visited her
only daughter, Mrs. Lydia Bonner, of Johnstown, whose guest she was until the
day previous to her sad death. James Duncan, one of the two sons of the
unfortunate woman, died some years ago, and William, her other son, passed away
last fall.
She is survived by one
brother, Isaac Walker, of Apollo.

ANDREW DUNCAN, a retired
farmer of Washington township, Indiana Co., Pa., was born in Armstrong county,
this State, Aug. 28, 1830, son of Andrew Duncan and grandson of James Duncan.
James Duncan was born in
Scotland, immigrated to the United States, and settled first in Dauphin county,
Pa., later going to Armstrong county, where he made his permanent home.
Andrew Duncan, son of
James, and father of Andrew Duncan, was born in Dauphin county, Pa., in 1796,
and was there educated and taught the trade of blacksmith. When he came to
Armstrong county he accompanied his father, and embarking in a blacksmithing
business carried it on the greater portion of his life, although he gave his
father valuable assistance with the farm work. Andrew Duncan married Lydia Deemer, a daughter of George [Frederick - ed.] and Lydia Deemer, and their children were: James, who is deceased; William, deceased;
Nancy, deceased; George, deceased; Andrew; Lydia, who resides at Pittsburg;
Charles, who resides at Portland, Oregon; Eliza Rebecca; and Eliza, who is
deceased. Andrew Duncan was a Democrat in politics, but never held any public
office. A member of the United Presbyterian Church, he held firmly to its
faith. His death occurred three miles from the town of Indiana, in 1861, when
he was aged sixty-five years.
Andrew Duncan, son of
Andrew Duncan, attended school in Armstrong county, and worked among the
neighboring farmers until he was twenty years of age. At that time he came to
Indiana county, and commenced learning the blacksmith's trade at Saltsburg,
following it for many years after he completed his apprenticeship. Later on in
life he purchased seventy-eight acres of land near Creekside
and operated same, carrying on general farming for a period of fourteen years.
In 1909, owing to an illness, he retired.
Mr. Duncan married (first)
Esther Campbell, a daughter of Cornelius Campbell and his wife Rebecca
(Stewart), and their children were:
Andrew, who died in infancy; and Rebecca Jane, who married William D. Fairman, of Washington township. After the death of his
first wife Mr. Duncan married (second) Nancy Anne Mahan, a daughter of Patrick
and Nancy (Wilson) Mahan, and they have had children as follows: Mary Nancy is living at home; Lydia Cora died
at the age of fourteen years, ten months; Charles Blair died in infancy; one
died in infancy unnamed; Lizzie Belle is living at home; Effa
Maud graduated from the Indiana State normal school in 1901, taught five terms
of school, returned to the normal and took the business course, graduating in
1907, and went to Pittsburg, where she taught three years in the Ellsworth
business college; she is now stenographer for a law firm in that city. As the
principles of the Prohibition party embody Mr. Duncan's own ideas, he is a
stanch adherent of same, but has never been willing to accept nomination for
office. The Center Presbyterian Church is his religious home.
Mr. Duncan takes great
pride in his family history and often tells of the experiences of his
grandmother, who suffered cruelly at the hands of the Indians. Her first
husband and their child were captured by the red men, and killed. Later she and
her daughter, who became the mother of Mr. Duncan, were stolen by the Indians
and kept captive for a period of eight months. The intelligent brain of the
captive mother worked out a means of escape. She succeeded in intoxicating her
captors, and while they lay in a drunken stupor fought her way through the
forest back to civilization. Her hardships while making her way back to her
home and family may well be imagined. None but a woman of unusual strength of
character could have survived the many dangers and constant exposure.
