AGED MAN SUICIDES.

Body of Jacob Long Found in the Dam at Mitchell's Mills.

The body of Jacob Long, Sr., was found in the mill dam at Mitchell's Mills, on Thursday morning.

He had risen before four o'clock that morning and lighted the lantern and put on his overshoes. It was raining when he went out. In the morning when he was missed from the house he was tracked across the hill to the creek and back again to the dam, where his body was found in two feet of water, part of his coat being exposed.

For some time previous to his death he had been slightly demented, taking spells in which he would become blind and stagger.

The coroner's inquest was held on Thursday afternoon. Coroner Davis empanelled the following jury:

C.W. Empfield, Jesse Sickenberger, S.T. Brown, S.A. Crossman, A.C. Ober, and Celestian Hines.

After hearing quite a lot of testimony, the jury finally brought in a verdict of suicidal drowning.

Mr. Long was 80 years of age and is survived by his second wife and the following children:  Jerry, A.L., and Judson Long, of Johnstown; Jacob Long, Jr., of Vintondale; Mrs. John Burnheimer, Mrs. H.L. Lydick, and Mrs. Ben Laney, of Mitchell's Mills; Mrs. D.H. Dick, of Sample Run; Mrs. B.F. Price, of Conemaugh; Mrs. R.M. Simpson, of Verona, and Mrs. B.F. Daugherty, of Indiana. He joined the Baptist church in his youth and was a member until his death. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. Furman, of Indiana, assisted by Rev. Hunt and Rev. Williams. Interment was made in the Diamondville cemetery.

JURY SAYS SUICIDE.

Jacob Long, Aged 80 Years, of Mitchell's Mills, Met Shocking Death--Had Been Ill.

Jacob Long, aged 80 years, a pioneer of Mitchell's Mills, met a fearful death near there Thursday morning his body being found in the creek about six o'clock. An hour earlier he started out of the house saying nothing of his intention to his wife, who thought nothing out of the way. He remained so long that she became alarmed and after looking vainly for awhile called assistance and a search was started, nothing seriously wrong being apprehended.

Later one of the party noticed a man's coat above the shallow water of the creek and filled with alarm ran to the water's edge descrying in another instant the body of Mr. Long, lying on its face. He was hastily lifted but efforts to revive him were useless; he had been dead for several minutes. All that was mortal was carried to the stricken home which he had left but a short time before.

Thursday afternoon Coroner Davis went to Mitchell's Mills and empanelled the following jury:  C.W. Empfield, Jesse Sickenberger, S.F. Brown, S.A. Crossman, A.C. Ober and Celestian Hines. These witnesses were called:  T.C. Ruffner, Blaine O'Neill, Mrs. Elizabeth Long, John Kelly, Newton Long and M.S. Rodkey, the latter three stating it was their opinion that Mr. Long had committed suicide and the verdict rendered stated "it appears from the evidence before us that his death was caused by suicidal drowning, premeditated by said Jacob Long."

The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at one o'clock and interment was made at Mitchell's Mills.
