Notes for Samuel HAINLEY:

No hard evidence has come to light to prove that this Samuel Hainley was truly a son of Tobias, although it is widely assumed.

Statement made by M.J. Bartholomew, 774 W. Fire Notch Road, North Augusta, SC, 29860:

"In Woodberry Twp. tax lists, Samuel Hainley is typically enumerated separately from Tobias Heinlein and his sons. Moreover, in the Woodberry Twp. tax lists, Samuel Hainley's name is frequently spelled "Hainley" whereas Tobias Heinlein's and his sons' names are typically spelled "Hanline". Because the tax records for the township are recorded by a single individual in the tax book for a given year, this distinction by the Tax Collector in the spelling of the surnames coupled with the consistently separate enumeration of the families probably reflects a real difference between these families. My best guess, based on the traditions, records, and common spellings of the names, is that these Hainley and Heinlein families, who both immigrated in 1741, are not linked together through Samuel Hainley and Tobias Heinlein."

[Repeated attempts to re-contact M.J. Bartholomew have been unsuccessful - ed.]

The above said, note that both Tobias' and Samuel's surname is spelled identically in the 1808 entry following:

1808:  Tobias HANLINE, 200 acres, 3 horses, 3 cattle, value $1313

1808:  Tobias HANLINE, 150 acres, value $360

1808:  Samuel HANLINE, 150 acres, 1 horse, 1 cow, value $326

It is said that Samuel Hainley/Hainline came from Franklin Co. PA in 1802 with his father Tobias to help build Jacob Shoenfelt's stone house near East Sharpsburg, PA.  Samuel married Jacob's daughter Elizabeth.
