Notes for
David Henderson MYERS:
The
Altoona, PA "Morning Tribune", 24 October 1904
DAVID H.
MYERS-FORMER MANAGER OF THE GAZETTE
David
Henderson Myers, formerly a reporter on the Tribune, ex-managing editor of the
Altoona Gazette, a newspaper writer of reputation, and one of the best young
men in the city, died at his home, 932 17th St., at 10:15 o'clock Saturday
morning, of a complication of diseases. His physical ailments began 10 years
ago, and since then he had been a sufferer of pain which became more
aggravating with each passing month and year. During the past couple of years
his suffering had become intense; but he bore them uncomplainingly like a
Spartan and with the greatest fortitude until he passed across the silent river
to suffer no more.
Though
his death was expected, the news was received among his many friends with
sincere regret.
The
deceased early on life suffered a fall in which he sustained a fracture of the
left leg which left him a cripple. Later he again fell and fractured the leg
and it never healed properly and a disease of the hip joint set in and extended
to the left shoulder. The disease was a peculiar one and but two cases are
known to the physicians in Philadelphia, where he was several times a patient
at the University of Pennsylvania, under the care of Dr. Francis Willard, the
eminent specialist in joint diseases. He underwent several operations, Dr.
Willard performing the last in July, just a few weeks before he took to his bed
seven weeks ago. Bright's disease set in three weeks
ago and from that there were little hopes entertained for his recovery. He continued
to grow worse daily and last Thursday he lost all power of speech and the end
was momentarily expected, but he lingered on, all the time suffering untold
pain, which he bore with great fortitude until he passed away at the time
mentioned above. The members of his family were at the bedside at the time and
each was recognized before the last spark of life ebbed away. David Henderson
Myers was a son of Jacob (deceased) and Emma C. Myers, and was born in Altoona
June 14, 1872. He was educated in the city schools and was graduated from
Altoona high school in the class of 1890. He then entered the employ of the
Pennsylvania Railroad company as a clerk in the cab shop, under Shop Clerk H.
B. Kendig. While he was so engaged he looked forward
to and decided on law as a profession and became a student of Blackstone,
reading with the law firm of Neff, Hicks & Geesey.
On leaving the company's service he spent a year in that law office, and in
1893 passed the preliminary examination for admission to the Blair county bar.
In 1895
he gave up the legal profession and turned to newspaper work and became a
reporter on the Altoona Gazette. He did not remain on that paper for any great
length of time, as in the same year he became a reporter on the Altoona
Tribune. He held the position for four years, during which time he made his
reputation as a newspaper man of marked ability. He became correspondent of
several metropolitan dailies and extended his reputation as a writer. He became
city editor of the Altoona Gazette in 1899 and filled this position with credit
until the fall in 1900, when he resigned to take a position on the Pittsburgh
Press. He was assigned to labor news and reported the big steel strike of that
year. His reputation was made in Pittsburgh, when he reported the passing
through of the McKinley funeral train in a way that brought him praise and
stamped him as one of the rising newspaper men of that city. In 1902 he
returned to Altoona because his physical condition would no longer permit him
to follow reportorial duty on a big city daily and entered the employ of the
Gazette as managing editor, which position he held until July 9, 1904, when ill
health compelled the relinquishment of all labor. He then went to Philadelphia
and underwent another operation, thinking it would bring him relief, but he
came home and during the first week in September took his bed never to leave it
again. Mr. Myers was an able newspaper man and as a reporter he stood well to
the front. He was qualified with high literary ability and during his leisure
moments wrote numerous poems and short stories which were published in both
newspapers and magazines. He was a man who made friends easily and he had a
host of them who will regret his untimely demise. He was a man of integrity and
of exceptional ability which would have insured him a brilliant career in newspaperdom. He was a member of Washington camp No. 31,
Patriotic Order of Sons of America.
Deceased
is survived by his loving and devoted mother and two brothers, John D.H. Myers
of Juniata, and Levi B. Myers of this city.
The
remains can be viewed from noon until 9 o'clock this evening. The funeral will
take place Tuesday afternoon, public services to be conducted at the house at
2:30 o'clock. The interment will be private and will be made in Fairview
cemetery.

In the
death of Mr. David H. Meyers, which occurred in this city Saturday, the
newspaper profession lost one of its best
known members. This is true not only in a local sense, but in the broader
one of state newspapers as well. An indefatigable worker, he wielded the pen
for months after the ordinary man would have ceased work, genial in manner, he
was a pleasant companion, a born discerner of news, he knew it when it
presented itself and always gave it to his readers in readable shape; loyal as
friend, he was ever courteous to those with whom he did not agree. Possibly no
man in the profession had a larger circle of friends and those sincerely regret
his death.
