MRS. MARY GLASS

 

Widow of Harry [Daniel F. - ed.] Glass, died at 5:10 o'clock this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Helley, 803 Broadway, Juniata, of old age. She had been in poor health for several months. She was born at Roaring Spring on August 24, 1825. Her maiden name was Mary Hanley. She was twice married, the first time to Joseph Nicewanger of Duncansville. After his death, she was married to Harry [Daniel F. - ed.] Glass, who died fifteen years ago. She was for several years a resident of Altoona, but has for some time been making her home with her daughter in Juniata. She leaves one son, to the first union, Samuel Nicewanger, and these children to the second union:  David, Louis H. and Martin Glass, all of Altoona, Mrs. J.C. Detro of Altoona, Mrs. Lizzie Adams of Canan Station, Mrs. Della Helley of Juniata and Mrs. Minnie Stouch of Eldorado. Mrs. Glass was a member of the Chestnut Avenue Methodist Episcopal church. The funeral will take place at 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Helley. Interment in Fairview cemetery.

Daniel F. Glass

 

Died at his home, 116 Lexington avenue, yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock, of paralysis. He had been ailing for the past three years. He was born September 24, 1823, at Henrietta and lived all his life in this county. He came to Altoona in 1872 and had since been employed as a carpenter in the company's freight shop. On July 16, 1854, he wedded Mrs. Mary Nicewonger, who, with these children, survives:  Mrs. Sarah Kelly, Mrs. Charlotte Detrow [Dutrow], Mrs. Lizzie Adams, Mrs. Della Helley, Mrs. Minnie Stouch, David H., Martin H., and Louis H., all of Altoona, and two stepsons, T.H. Nicewonger of this city and S.H. Nicewonger of Winston, N.C., and one brother, Martin Glass, of this city. He was a member of the Chestnut Avenue Methodist church. The deceased was a member of the Voluntary Relief association. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon, leaving his late residence at 2 o'clock and proceeding to the Chestnut Avenue church, where services will be held; interment in Fairview cemetery.

WELL-KNOWN CITIZEN DEAD

 

T.H. Nicewonger Passes Away, After a Short Illness.

 

Theophilus H. Nicewonger, the well known pension attorney, suddenly died at the house of his daughter, Mrs. Cora Heister, of 1067 Fourth avenue, at 12:30 this noon, of a complication of diseases. He became ill last Saturday evening and gradually grew worse until this noon when death ended his sufferings. Mr. Nicewonger was born in Black Lick, Indiana county, February 22, 1847, and had resided in this city since 18**. On August 2*, 18**, he was married to Miss Sarah Catherine Hoover, of Taylor township, who survives, as well as the following children:  Mrs. Jennie L. Munson, of Sanford, Fla.; Mrs. Carrie Creswell, of Monongahela City; Mrs. Elsie Brown, Mrs. Orpha Sweeney, both of Wilkinsburg; Mrs. Ollie Styles, of Philadelphia; Mrs. Maude Coon, of Lambertville, N.J., and Mrs. Cora Heister, of this city. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Glass, of 308 Chestnut avenue, and one brother, Samuel, foreman of the railroad shops at Charlotte, N.C.; also by four half-brothers and sisters. At the age of 17 he joined company C, of the Two Hundred and Fifth Pennsylvania volunteers. He was a member of post 62, G.A.R., Ben Davis lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; council No. 472, Jr. O.U.A. M., Wopsononock tribe, Improved Order of Red Men, and camp 60, Sons of Veterans. Prior to his death he was Colonel of B.M. Morrow's regiment, U.V.U., and an obligated member to camp 12, Sons of Veterans; also an obligated member of circle 8, Ladies of the G.A.R. He was a member of the Chestnut Avenue Methodist church. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Died at 8.40 o'clock last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cora Hiester, 1516 Twenty-second avenue. She was the widow of Theopholis Nicewonger. She was born on April 10, 1851, in Roaring Spring, a daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Smith) Hoover. Surviving are seven daughters, Mrs. Jennie Woodworth of Conneaut, O., Mrs. Orpha Sweeney and Mrs. Carrie Miller of Altoona, Mrs. Elsie Brown of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Maud Coombe of Trenton, N.J., Mrs. Ollie Stiles of New York City and Mrs. Cora Heister of the city; one brother, Howard Hoover of Philadelphia; three sisters, Mrs. Dora Finney of Berkeley Hills, Calif., Mrs. Elsie Wagner of Henrietta and Mrs. Nannie Thornburg of Chicago, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Nicewonger was a member of the Grace Methodist church and Missionary society, Mr. Ake's Sunday school class, circle No. 8, G.A.R., and the Dysart W.C.T.U. Friends will be received at the Hickey funeral home after 7 o'clock tonight.

 

NICEWONGER--Funeral services for Sarah Catherine Nicewonger, of 1516 Twenty-second avenue, will be held at Hickey funeral home by Rev. Ira Duvall at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Interment in Fairview cemetery. Friends are being received at the Hickey funeral home after 7 o'clock tonight.

SAMUEL H. NICEWONGER,

 

Well known tax collector of Allegheny township, died at 7 o'clock Saturday evening at his home, north of Duncansville. Death was caused by laryngitis. Mr. Nicewonger was born at East Sharpsburg, Jan. 29, 1850, and had spent most of his life in Blair county. For a period of twenty years he resided in North Carolina, returning ten years ago and taking up his residence at the home where he died. He was a member of the Methodist church of Duncansville and a prominent resident of the township. Surviving are his wife and the following children:  A.E. Nicewonger of the Canal Zone, Panama; O.W. of Westfield, N.J.; Miss Ivy A. of Altoona, Mrs. Samuel Neal of Duncansville and E.L. of Philadelphia. The following half-brothers and sisters also survive:  Mrs. G.L. Adams, Mrs. J.C. Dutrow, Mrs. Calvin Stough, Mrs. William Kelly, Martin, Lewis and David Glass, all of Altoona. Funeral services were held at the late residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon in charge of Rev. J.V.L. Wagner, pastor of the Hicks Memorial Methodist church at Duncansville. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery, this city.

The residence of Mr. Isaac Dilling at Clover Creek, was the scene of a pleasant and interesting event, today, Thursday, where at the hour of high noon, a double wedding was solemnized, when two sisters became happy brides. The principals of the nuptials were Mr. Roy Sell, of Altoona to Miss Nannie Dilling; Mr. David Glass of Altoona, to Miss Anetta Dilling. The wedding of the last named couple was in the nature of a surprise to all the bride's friends. The ceremony was performed by the former groom's father, Rev. Brice Sell, of McKees. The attendants were Mr. Daniel Sell, of Altoona and Miss Elsie Dilling, of this place. The first named bride was robed in white swiss and the latter in light blue silk. While the brides' maid wore white. The wedding was a quiet one, only the immediate friends of the double contracting parties being present. A large number of handsome and valuable gifts were received by the brides. The happy young people will make Altoona their future homes.

MRS. SARAH KELLEY

 

Wife of John Kelly of 100 East Chestnut avenue, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Calvin Stouch, 230 Lexington avenue, at 1 o'clock yesterday of paralysis. She had been in good health until last Monday, when she was stricken with paralysis, resulting in her death. She was born in Roaring Spring on May 4, 1855, and was a daughter of Daniel (deceased) and Mary Glass. On August 13, 1876, she was married in this city to John Kelley, who with her mother, and one son, Frank, survive. Three brothers, David, Martin and Lewis Glass of Altoona, a half-brother, S.H. Nicewonger of Charlotte, N.C., and these sisters, survive:  Mrs. Lottie Dutrow, Mrs. Lizzie Adams, Mrs. Dellie Helley and Mrs. Minnie Stouch, all of this city. She was a member of the Methodist church at Roaring Spring from girlhood. The funeral services will be held at the home of her sister Mrs. Stouch, tomorrow at 2:30. Interment will follow in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. CHARLOTTE DUTROW

 

Widow of J.C. Dutrow, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Bruce Nicodemus, 834 Seventeenth street, at 12.30 o'clock yesterday noon of a complication of diseases after a lengthy illness. She was born in Sharpsburg on July 9, 1856, a daughter of Daniel and Mary (Hanley) Glass. Her husband, J.C. Dutrow, died in 1931. Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Charles Dutrow of St. Louis, Mo., Daniel Dutrow and Mrs. J.H. Vance of Cleveland, O., and Mrs. Nicodemus of the city; thirteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one brother and two sisters, L.H. Glass, Mrs. Calvin Stouch and Mrs. William Helley, all of the city. Mrs. Dutrow was a member of the United Brethren church for many years. Funeral services will be held at the Nicodemus home at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery. The body may be viewed at the Nicodemus home.

Hinton in Martinsburg, where he had been making his home for the past two and one-half years, death being attributed to complications. He had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Dutrow was born in Hagerstown, Md., April 14, 1858, the son of George and Elizabeth Dutrow. He was united in marriage with Lottie Glass on April 13, 1876, who survives, with the following children:  Edward Dutrow of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Olie Vance and David A. Dutrow of Cleveland, O., and Mrs. Bruce A. Nicodemus of 834 Seventeenth street, Altoona. He was a member of the First United Brethren church in this city and the White Cross lodge, Knights of Pythias, and retired from active work with the Pennsylvania railroad eight years ago, after a service of fifty years. The body was brought to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nicodemus, 834 Seventeenth street, where it may be viewed any time after 10 o'clock Sunday morning until the time of the funeral Monday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock, which will be conducted at the home by Rev. Dr. B.F. Bungard. Interment will be made in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. ELIZABETH ADAMS

 

Widow of Gilbert L. Adams, died at her home, 609 Fifty-eighth street, at 1.30 o'clock Saturday afternoon of a complication of diseases after an illness of five years. She was born at Sharpsburg on Jan. 15, 1858, a daughter of Daniel and Mary Hanley Glass. Surviving are one daughter and one son, Mrs. Mary Dunn and Clyde Adams, at home; five grandchildren, one brother and three sisters, Rev. L.H. Glass and Mrs. Lottie Dutrow of the city, Mrs. William Helley of Juniata and Mrs. Calvin Stough of Eldorado. Mrs. Adams was a member of the Mennonite Memorial church. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Roher & Mauk funeral home with Rev. W.T. Fisher officiating. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery.

GILBERT LLOYD ADAMS

 

Who operated the Enterprise Carpet Cleaning works at Canan Station for a quarter century, died yesterday morning at 11.15 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Dunn, 609 Fifty-eighth street. Death resulted from complications following several months illness. Deceased was born in Centre county, Oct. 27, 1854. He had resided in Altoona and vicinity for the past fifty-five years. He resided at Chestnut avenue and First street for a long period of years prior to making his home with his daughter. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Glass Adams, one daughter, Mrs. Dunn, at whose home he died, and a foster son Clyde Edmiston, at home. He also leaves one brother, Matthew Adams of Port Matilda; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a member of the First United Brethren church. Funeral services will be conducted at the Roher & Mauk Funeral home in Juniata at 10.30 o'clock Thursday morning followed by interment in Fairview cemetery.

REV. L.H. GLASS, RETIRED PASTOR, ENGINEER, DIES

 

Rev. Louis Henry Glass, aged 74, retired minister in the Mennonite church and retired locomotive engineer for the Pennsylvania railroad died at 9:50 o'clock this morning at the family home, 510 Twenty-First avenue. He had been in ill health for some time.

 

A native of McKees gap, he spent his entire life in this section, completing a term of fifty-one years service with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was retired from the company in 1931.

 

Rev. Glass was born on June 24, 1864, a son of Daniel and Mary (Hainley) Glass and he would have observed his 74th birthday in eight days. He received his early schooling in Altoona and was well known as a baseball player on the early teams in the city. He entered the railroad service on Jan. 24, 1881, as a car repairman.

 

He became a yard fireman and then an engineer, serving as an engineer for forty-two years, until his retirement on April 1, 1931. He was a gold button veteran. Several years after his retirement he took a trip to the west coast in the interest of the Mennonite church missions.

 

Rev. Glass' religious career began at the age of 8 years in the Methodist church. He was a class leader, Bible school teacher and local pastor in the Methodist church. Later he became a fully ordained minister in the Mennonite church and he filled the pulpit at the church at Eleventh avenue and Twenty-second street. Since his retirement from the ministry he was associated with the Fourth Street Church of God.

 

Rev. Glass was twice married, his first wife being Mrs. Alice (Walter) Glass. He is survived by his second wife, Edith Glass, and the following children: Mrs. A.E. Wolf of Altoona Mrs. W.T. Jones of Huntingdon, Mrs. H.B. Stevens of Branch Hill, N.J., Mrs. J.F. Baldwin of Washington D.C., Mrs. C.L. Olson of Juniata gap, Herman E. Louis H. Jr., Daniel and Hasley Glass, all of Altoona; also the following step-children: Mrs. J.C. Hainley of Dean, Mrs. Norman Beckel of Juniata, Mrs. Robert McFarland of Bellwood, Miss Joyce and Miss Margie Stiffler both at home and Wade Stiffler, in Washington, D.C. A sister, Mrs. Calvin Stouch, survives in Lake Glen, Fla., along with twenty-one grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

 

The body may be viewed at Mauk & Yates funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening.

 

Glass - The funeral of Rev. Louis Henry Glass of 510 Twenty-first avenue will be held on Sunday June 19 at 2:30 o'clock from the Fourth street Church of God with services in charge of Rev. J.F. Strine. Interment in Rose Hill cemetery. The body can be viewed at any time at the Mauk & Yates funeral home.
