Civil War letter, William H Slick to Mary Anna (Slick) Decker
March 28, 1865
Transcription of a letter found in the Civil War Pension files of John Decker.
The letter is from William H. Slick to his sister Mary Anna (Slick) Decker.
Mary Anna was the wife of John Decker. John was killed in action at Warwick
Swamp, Lee's Mill, VA, March 27, 1865. William who was serving in the same unit
as John wrote the letter March 28, 1865. They were on a scouting mission when
John was captured and killed. Transcribed by John Decker Aug 4, 1997. Note:
Portions of the letter were undecipherable.
Camp of the Penna. Calvary before Petersburg.
Dear sister,
I can state to you that I am well at this present time and I hope that this few
lines may find you same well. Mary, I have sad news to communicate to you on
the death of your husband Mr. John Decker. He was killed yesterday. We was out
on a scout and rebels ambushed us and killed him. He was shot dead instantly.
The ball entered his head at right ear and passed through his head. Heartbroken
Sister, I am not able to tell you whether I will be able to have his remains
sent home at the present or not. I had his body embalmed and if I can't have it
sent home I will have it buried so that I can have removed after this move is
over. If you want his remains sent home I will try and send it home. His
remains will leave here on the 30th of this month tried to get home with is
body but it is impossible to do so as we are under marching orders and I can't
get home. I will send his remains to Washington City and from there his body
will be sent home. I have his overcoat and blanket here and I suppose that I
will have to throw them away as I have no place to put them. They captured him
and after they took him they killed him, they stripped him of all his clothes
and wrote a peace and pined it on his brest. Here I will send you a piece of
the ball that killed him. Nothing more to write still remaining your -- ------
------- your brother.
Mr. William H Slick
Mrs. Mary Anna Decker
Note written across letter at end. "Return to Mrs. Mary Decker care of

Man and Wife Drown Near New Florence
Sugar Run Dam Tragedy
A quiet Sunday outing in the woods at Sugar Run dam, about three miles east of
New Florence, participated in by the families of H. Reed Decker and Frank
Shannon, residing between New Florence and Seward, was brought to a tragic
ending about 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon when the heads of one of the
families, Mr. and Mrs. Decker, were drowned. Mr. Decker gave up his life in an
attempt to rescue his wife, the bodies of both being found in embrace by J.L.
Campbell of Wilkinsburg, who worked for more than an hour before he succeeded
in bringing them to the surface.
Mrs. Decker and Mrs. Shannon and the two Shannon children went into the dam
where the water was believed to be shallow to take a plunge before their
departure. Mr. Decker and Mr. Shannon had been in for a plunge earlier in the
day and did not accompany them.
Suddenly the two women and the two Shannon children got beyond their depth in a
hold in the dam where the water was from 10 to 16 feet deep, and just as
quickly both Decker and Shannon sprang into the water to rescue them. Mr.
Decker it is said was not a good swimmer and he fought a losing battle, sinking
with Mrs. Decker in a very short time. Mr. Shannon was able to reach his wife
and both children and he brought them safely to land. Although he was exhausted
as a result of his struggles in the water, he attempted to lend aid to Mr. and
Mrs. Decker, but both had disappeared and their bodies did not rise to the
surface. Mr. Campbell and others worked an hour before the former located the
bodies in embrace at the bottom of the dam and brought them to the surface. The
dam furnishes a water supply for the Pennsylvania railroad and it is said that
in some places it is 50 or 60 feet deep.
Member of Large Family
H. Reed Decker was about 33 years of age and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel
Decker of New Florence. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a young
son and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Zora Boyer, Miss Jean Decker,
Logan, Samuel, Frank and Lloyd Decker, all of New Florence; Mrs. May
Livingston, Brownsville, and Clifford Decker, Pittsburgh. He was a member of
the United Brethren church of New Florence and was employed by the Werder Coal
Co. He spent his entire life in the neighborhood of New Florence.
Mrs. Decker, aged 30, whose maiden name was Tabitha McNeely, was a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah McNeely. For many years the McNeely family resided in New
Florence, where Mrs. McNeely died a number of years ago. She is survived by her
father now a resident of Seward, and several brothers and sisters, together
with the young son already mentioned. Mrs. Decker also was a member of the New
Florence United Brethren church.
The funeral probably will take place in New Florence tomorrow afternoon.
