Sell, Jesse C., Twentieth Century History of Altoona and Blair County, Pennsylvania, and Representative Citizens, Chicago, IL: Richmond-Arnold, 1911, pp. 597-598.

HENRY M. STIFFLER, formerly burgess of Duncansville, Pa., and a veteran of the Civil War, has been a resident of this pleasant borough since 1896.  He was born near Enterprise, Bedford County, Pa., May 20, 1838, and is a son of Peter and Elizabeth (Smith) Stiffler.

Peter Stiffler was born in York County, Pa., a son of Peter Stiffler, who was one of the old settlers.  In 1847, the parents of Henry M. Stiffler moved to Blair County and settled in Freedom Township.  The grandfather, who had probably come to York County about 1802, accompanied them and died there. Peter Stiffler married Elizabeth Smith, a native of Bedford County, and of their children three survive: Esther, who is the widow of S.W. Furney, formerly of Carroll County, Mo., resides at Eldorado, in that state; Henry M.; and Elizabeth A., who is the wife of Samuel A. Stultz, of Fortesque, Mo.

Henry M. Stiffler was reared on a farm and received a district school education. In 1879 he moved to Altoona, where he resided until 1891, when he removed to Allegheny Township, Blair County, where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1896, when he came to Duncansville. He still retains his farm of 104 acres in Allegheny Township. In February, 1864, Mr. Stiffler enlisted for service in the Civil War, entering Co. A, 55th Pa. Vol. Inf., which was attached to the Army of the James, and he was stationed in South Carolina and in Virginia and was honorably discharged on May 26, 1865. On May 6, 1864, while on the advance skirmish line in Virginia, between City Point and Petersburg, he received a wound in his right foot which was serious enough to confine him to a hospital for three months. After his discharge he returned to Blair County and resumed farming in Freedom Township, and resided there until he removed to Altoona in 1879.

Mr. Stiffler was married September 8, 1859, to Miss Jane E. McConnell, a native of Greenfield Township, now in Blair County, where she was born October 20, 1842. Her parents were James and Elizabeth (Helsel) McConnell, both natives of Pennsylvania. The father lived in Juniata Township, Blair County, for a number of years and later moved with his family to Greenfield and afterwards to Freedom Township, where both he and wife died. Mrs. Stiffler has two surviving sisters: Margaret, wife of J. A. Thompson, residing at Newry, Pa.; and Agnes, wife of Adam Hazenstab, of Freedom Township. Mr. and Mrs. Stiffler celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on September 8, 1909. They are members of the Lutheran church at Duncansville and in this connection as in others, are valued and esteemed. Mr. Stiffler has always been identified with the Republican party and has always taken an active citizen's interest in the welfare of the place in which he has lived. He has served three years as burgess of Duncansville as well as on many public committees. He is a member of Stephen C. Potts Post No. 62, G. A. R., at Altoona.

H.M. STIFFLER, WAR VETERAN, EXPIRES

Henry M. Stiffler, one of Duncansville's oldest and best known residents, Civil war veteran and ex-burgess of the town, died at his home on Beech street, last evening at 7.15 o'clock of a complication of diseases after a lengthy illness. Mr. Stiffler was in his 87th year, and had resided in the borough for nearly thirty years.

He was born near New Enterprise, Bedford county, on May 20, 1838, and was the only son of Peter and Elizabeth Smith Stiffler, both long deceased. Only one member of his family survives, beside his aged wife, a sister, Mrs. Samuel A. Stultz of Topeka, Kas.

On Sept. 8, 1859, he was united in marriage with Miss Jane E. McConnell, a native of Greenfield township, a daughter of James and Elizabeth Helsel McConnell, who survives. No children were born to this union.

The deceased resided with his parents in Bedford county until nine years of age when they became residents of Blair county, in which county he resided until the time of his death. He was reared on the family farm and received a district school education. In 1879, the Stifflers became residents of Altoona for a period of twelve years. In 1891 they moved to Allegheny township, in Maple Hollow, where he followed the occupation of farmer for a period of five years, retiring and moving to Duncansville in 1896.

In February, 1864, Mr. Stiffler enlisted for service in the Civil war, entering Co. A, 55th Pa. Vol. Inf., which was attached to the Army of the James, stationed in South Carolina and in Virginia. He was honorably discharged on May 26, 1865. On May 6, 1864, while on the advance skirmish line in Virginia, between City Point and Petersburg, he was wounded in his right foot very seriously, being confined to a hospital for a period of three months. His residence at the time he entered the war was in Freedom township, and it was to his farm there that he returned upon his discharge from the army.

He served a term of three years as burgess of Duncansville. He was a respected citizen, law abiding and absolutely honest. He was a firm advocate of the "pay as you go" policy throughout his entire life.

Politically, he was Republican, and his last trip outside his home was on election day last November, when he cast a Republican ballot for the electors of President elect Coolidge.

Mr. and Mrs. Stiffler observed their golden wedding anniversary on Sept. 8, 1909. Mrs. Stiffler has also been confined to her home for the past year or more, the greater part of the time on account of illness.

He was a member of the Duncansville Lutheran church for many years and also a member of Stephen C. Potts Post No. 62, G.A.R. of Altoona. The funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the Duncansville Lutheran church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Isaac Krider. Interment will be made in the Carson Valley cemetery.

AGED RESIDENT IS ACCIDENT VICTIM

Mrs. Margaret Thompson Steps In Path of Automobile Near Home In Newry and Is Instantly Killed.

CAR WAS OPERATED BY CURRYVILLE YOUNG MAN

Woman Was Crossing Street After Talking With Neighbor About Mishap Which Befell Her Grandson.

Mrs. Margaret Thompson, aged 79 years, one of Newry's best known and highly esteemed residents, was instantly killed last evening at 8 o'clock on the street in front of her home when she stepped into the path of an automobile driven by Russell Leidy of Curryville.

Several hours earlier in the evening Mrs. Thompson's grandson, Gerald Thompson, who resides only a few doors away, fell from a porch to the pavement, striking his head on the cement. He was rendered unconscious and was taken to the Nason hospital in Roaring Spring, where he remains in an unconscious condition today. At the hospital it was stated that he has a possible fracture of the skull and that an X-ray will be taken to determine the extent of his injuries as soon as his condition warrants.

Mrs. Thompson had been at the grandson's home and stopped in front of the George Burk home, where she talked with members of the Burk family. She then started across the street to her home, stepping directly into the path of the automobile driven by Leidy.

Car Within Limit.

According to witnesses, the car was moving within the 20-mile speed limit in the borough, but Mrs. Thompson was knocked to the roadway. The driver stopped within 20 feet and went to her assistance as neighbors arrived. It was found that she was dead. However, a priest was summoned from the monastery at Kladden, who administered extreme unction, the Newry parish priest, Rev. James Hickey being out of town at the time.

A physician was summoned who pronounced the woman dead. Coroner Chester C. Rothrock and State Motor Patrolman B.V. Kilrane were called and went to Newry and conducted an investigation. Several witnesses, including Dolly Jane Thompson, a granddaughter of the victim, and George Burk and Wilbur Burk all agreed that the woman stepped directly into the path of the car and that the driver was not to blame. Leidy was not held and Coroner Rothrock will determine later whether or not he will conduct an inquest.

Mrs. Thompson had resided in Newry for many years, where she served as tax collector. She was interested in the affairs of the borough and was prominently identified with the work of St. Patrick's Catholic church, of which she had been a lifelong member.

Native of Greenfield Township.

She was a daughter of George and Elizabeth Yingling and was born in Greenfield township on May 19, 1856. She was united in marriage with John A. Thompson fifty-eight years ago, the ceremony being performed in Newry by Rev. James Bradley, the pioneer priest at St. Patrick's church. Mr. Thompson died sixteen years ago.

Surviving are the following children:  Charles A. Thompson of Altoona, Mrs. Agnes R. Eger, residing west of Newry, Mrs. Elizabeth Moses of Newry, Peter S. Thompson of Harrisburg and a half-sister, Mrs. Rebecca Glass of Hollidaysburg. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews residing in Huntingdon county.

The funeral will be conducted Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Newry, in charge of the parish pastor, Rev. James Hickey. Interment will be made in St. Patrick's church cemetery.
