PETER JOHNSTON.

Peter Johnston, aged 86 years, died at the home of his son, Harry, of Homer City, Monday evening of last week, of complications incident to advanced age. He was a civil war veteran. Previous to coming to Homer City, to make his home with his son, Mr. Johnston had resided in Center county, where he had conducted a farm. The following children survive the deceased: Alonzo Johnston, of Diamondville; John Johnston, of Pittsburgh; Mrs. Elizabeth Bracken, of Mahaffey; H.B. Johnston, A.M. Johnston and Alex. Johnston, and Mrs. Frank Graham, all of Homer City. The remains were taken to Center county for interment in Pine Grove cemetery.

Article found in the obituary clippings collection at the Indiana County, PA Historical & Genealogical Society:

Mrs. Caroline Johnston, wife of Peter Johnston, and well known to many of the GAZETTE readers, died at her home at Pine Grove Mills, Center county, Pa., on Nov. 16, of cancer of the stomach, aged 63 years and 8 months. She is survived by her husband and seven children, two daughters and five sons. Interment was made in the grave yard of the U.P. church at her late home. Mrs. Johnston had been a patient sufferer for the past six months. The family formerly lived on the old homestead three miles south of town on the Blairsville road.

FRANK W. GRAHAM, 92, a former resident of 62 West Elm St., Homer City, died Sunday, October 16, 1966 at Adrian Hospital, Punxsutawney. He had been a patient at Hedrick Convalescent Home at Punxsutawney for a number of years.

Prior to his retirement in 1947 he had been employed as a car inspector for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and was a member of Homer City United Presbyterian Church; a life member of the Homer City Fire Department and a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Carmen of America.

Survivors include a son Rob M., Indiana R.D. 1; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his wife Zonetta Johnston Graham and two brothers.

Friends are being received at the Askew Funeral Home, Homer City, where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. Theodore T. Taylor will officiate and interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Indiana.

Members of the Homer City Fire Department will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home at 7 p.m. this evening.

PETER A. BRACKEN, 63 West Elm Street, Homer City, passed away at his home yesterday, Sept. 5, at 2:30 P.M.

Born in Indiana County, May 3, 1880, he was the son of Lorenza and Anna (Johnston) Bracken.

Surviving are his wife, the former Barbara Witherite, and these children: Robert D. Bracken, of Twisp, Wash.; Bruce Barrett, of Windber; Mina, wife of William Ferguson, Akron, O.; Barney Barrett, Jacksonville, Fla., and William Barrett, Lebanon, Ind.

A daughter of Lorenzo and Anna Johnson Bracken she was born April 18, 1885 in Sayre, Pa.

Mrs. Nicodemus was preceded in death by her husband Ira Clyde Nicodemus June 15, 1929.

She had been a resident of Diamondville from 1935 to 1947 prior to moving to Marion, N.Y. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include 11 children: Paul F., Carl M., Quay L., Mrs. Arthur (Ethel) Meisch, Mrs. Neil (Edna Joy) Botticelli, Clyde W., Mrs. Dona Zapf, and Noble E., all of Rochester, N.Y.; Mrs. Merrill (Ruby) Kramp, Hampton, Va.; Mrs. John (Etta) Battzzo and Dell E. both of Marion, N.Yl; two brothers: Meredith and William Bracken, both of Mahaffey R.D. 1; 38 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted in the Union church at Diamondville on Wednesday, followed by interment in the Greenwood cemetery, Indiana, for Orlonzo P. Johnston, aged 69 years, nine months and 21 days, who died June 30 at his home in Diamondville. The services were in charge of Rev. C.A. Hines, of Los Angeles, Cali., a former resident of Diamondville. The deceased, resided for a number of years at Homer City before locating in Diamondville. He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Emma Sickenburger Johnston, and these children: Charles A., of Homer City; Lemuel C., of Diamondville; Mrs. Mary Caroline Frank, of Charter Oak, and William B. Johnston, of Derry; also a sister and these brothers: Mrs. Nettie Gerhard and Harry Johnston and Alex Johnston, of Homer City; John T. Johnston, of Bellvue, and Albert Johnston, of Derry. He also leaves 22 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Anna M. Johnston. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon in the Homer City M.E. church by the pastor, Rev. Ling, followed by interment in the Greenwood cemetery, of town, for Mrs. Anna M. Johnston, a well-known resident of Diamondville, who died on Friday at the home of her son, Charles Johnston of Homer City. Her death was due to pneumonia, having been stricken with the malady while visiting at the home of her son. The deceased, whose maiden name was Miss Anna M. Sickenberger, was aged almost 76 years, and was the widow of Lon P. Johnston, who died about a year ago at Diamondville. Mrs. Johnson, who was a daughter of the late Michael Sickenberger, had been a resident of Diamondville for many years. She leaves these children: Charles Johnston, of Homer City; Claude L. Johnston, of Diamondville; Mrs. Maude Frank, of Charter Oak, and William B. Johnston, of Dixonville; also 22 grandchildren and three great grandchildren and these sisters: Mrs. Margaret Laudermilch, of Pittsburgh; Mrs. Lottie Hill, of Windber, and Mrs. Clara Gibson, of Diamondville.

CHARLES A. JOHNSTON, 71, of Penn Run, R.D. 1, passed away suddenly at his home at 4:45 this morning.

Born in Johnsonburg, Pa., November 13, 1879, he was a son of Orlanzo and Anna Sickenberger Johnston.

Surviving are his wife, Dora Repine Johnston, a daughter Ruby, wife of Joseph Campbell, Homer City, a son, Norman A. Johnston, Homer City, a sister, Mrs. Mary Franks, Petersburg, R.D., a brother, William B. Johnston, Diamondville, and two grandchildren.

Mr. Johnston was engaged in the automobile business in Homer City until his retirement in February, 1946. He was a member of Homer City Lodge 141 I.O.O.F., and the United Presbyterian Church of Homer City.

Friends will be received at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph H. Campbell, 2 Ridge avenue, Homer City, after 7:00 this evening, where services will be conducted by the Rev. A.L. Yarnelle at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon, November 18.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Indiana.

Mrs. Johnston was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Homer City, and of Penelope Rebekah Lodge No. 431.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Joseph H. (Ruby) Campbell, with whom she made her home, and a son, Norman A. Johnston of Homer City; one sister, Mrs. Lottie Mock of Derry; a brother, George Repine, Windber; and two grandchildren.

Friends will be received at her late home after 7:00 o'clock this evening, where services will be conducted on Sunday, June 3, at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. A.L. Yarnell. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are in charge of the Askew Funeral Home, Homer City.

Resident and Merchant of Diamondville Dies in Hospital Here

L. Claude Johnston, 58, a resident for 14 years in Diamondville, where he conducted a mercantile business, died last night in Indiana Hospital. A son of Lon and Anna (Sickenberger) Johnston he was born January 8, 1882. His early life was spent in Blair County and he was a merchant in Windber for a time. He was a member of the Windber lodges of the Loyal Order of Moose and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He was married twice, his first wife, Orpha (Repine) Johnston, dying January 24, 1919. He was married (second) to Mrs. Julia (McCully) Bracken, whom he leaves together with three sons: Charles, Raymond and Earl Johnston, all of Diamondville; three step-sons: Donald Bracken of Meadville and Charles and William Bracken, both of Diamondville; three daughters: Mrs. Emanuel Langham, Mrs. David States and Geraldine Johnston, all of Diamondville; eleven grandchildren; two brothers: Charles Johnston of Homer City and William B. Johnston of Clymer and a sister, Mrs. John Franks of Neffs Mills.

MRS. JULIA E. BRACKEN JOHNSTON, 88, Clymer RD 2, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 1973.

Born in Clearfield County on Sept. 14, 1885, she was a daughter of Stewart and Martha Shaw McCully.

She was a member of the Baptist Church of Kerrmore.

Surviving are a son, William Bracken, Clymer RD 2; a daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Wilkins, Clymer; four step-children; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters: Mrs. Maude Peterman, Coalport; Mrs. Letty Wolfe and Howard McCully, both of Curwensville; and Stephen McCully, Kerrmore.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Bracken, in 1911, and by her second husband, L.C. Johnston, in 1940; and also by two sons and a daughter: Donald, Charles and Ines.

Friends are being received 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at the Bence Funeral Home, Clymer, where services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Randall Luther officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Indiana.

Mary Johnston Franks

Mrs. Mary Carolyn Johnston Franks of Pine Grove Mills died unexpected at her home on Monday at 5:15 p.m.

Born July 9, 1883, in DuBois, she was the daughter of Orlando and Anna Mary Schenberger Johnston. On Feb. 17, 1902, she married John M. Franks, who survives, with these children.

Mrs. Charlotte Reed and Mrs. Florence Hallock, both of State College; Mrs. Edna Close, Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Carrie Henninger, Pine Grove Mills; Robert E. Franks, Pleasant Gap; Melvin C. Franks and Mrs. Anna Jean Helmick, both of Petersburg RD, and Donald E. Franks, State College RD.

Thirteen grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.

She was a member of the State College Presbyterian Church and the Ferguson Township Lady Rebekah Lodge.

Funeral services will be held at the Koch Funeral Home on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Wade Miller of the United Presbyterian Church of McAlevy's Fort officiating.

Interment will be made in the Greenlea Presbyterian cemetery, Huntingdon County. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

A daughter of Emory G. and Emma Dorvitt Carr, she was born Aug. 17, 1886, in Madera, Clearfield County.

Mrs. Johnston was a member of the Clymer Christian Church.

Surviving are three daughters and a son: Mildred Johnston at home, Alfred Clair of Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Ethel Mae Learn of Springfield, Oregon, and Mrs. Thomas (Dorothy) Howarth of Commodore; seven grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1955; a son, Emory, in May 1963; and an infant daughter.

Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. today (Friday) and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday in the Bence Funeral Home, Clymer, where services will be conducted Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Allen Rustad will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Indiana.

He was a member of the Homer City Methodist Church and was formerly a barber in Homer City and had operated a trucking business since World II, retiring 12 years ago.

He is survived by his widow, Emma Long Johnston and two sons: Dale M., Derry; Alex, Jr., Homer City; two sisters: Mrs. Mabel Connelly, Derry; Mrs. Jane Nevins, Derry; five grandsons; one great-granddaughter; a niece and four nephews.

A former resident of Indiana County, she was born June 9, 1895 at Canoe Creek, Pa., a daughter of Albert and Bessie Clapper Johnson.

Survivors include her husband Robert; one son, Charles, Derry, and one daughter, Mrs. Leon (Eileen) Sowers, Latrobe, also five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Fisher Funeral Home, Derry, from 2-5 and 7-10 p.m., both today and Sunday. Requiem Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Martin's Church, New Derry. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

MRS. JANE B. NEVINS, 67, 119 South Ligonier St., Derry, died unexpectedly at Latrobe Hospital Thursday, January 13, 1966.

She was a former resident of Homer City and a daughter of Albert M. and Bessie Bell Johnston.

Born at Canoe Creek, Pa., Blair County, Juny [sic] 6, 1898, she is survived by three sons: Glenn E. Irwin; Waid H., Homer City, and Charles R., Youngstown, Pa. Eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive along with a sister, Mrs. Robert (Mabel) Connolly of Derry.

The deceased was a member of the Derry Methodist Church and of Arbutus Lodge of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of railroad Trainmen.

Friends may call at the Fisher Funeral Home in Derry from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. today and tomorrow. Services will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday at 2 p.m. with Rev. C.E. Stollings officiating, and interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Indiana.
