JOSEPH BERKEY IS DEAD AT RIPE AGE

Expires at Daughter's Home Near Hooversville--Has Relatives Here

FUNERAL LIKELY SATURDAY

Word reached this city to-day of the death of the Rev. Joseph Berkey, an aged native of Somerset County at 8 o'clock this morning at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Shaffer, who live about two miles northeast of Hooversville, in Shade Township. Mr. Berkey had been in poor health for a long time and had been practically blind for the past five years. He was almost ninety years old and his death was due to diseases incident to old age. He was a cousin of Peter Berkey, who died on April 16th in St. Paul.

Joseph Berkey was born at Hagevo, a small town near Arrow, Somerset County, where at one time a tribe of Indians had their headquarters. He grew up to manhood there and lived in that locality practically all his life. Mr. Berkey farmed for a number of years, and then entered the ministry, preaching in German Baptist churches for more than fifty years. He occupied the pulpit within the past year or two.

Mr. Berkey was married first to a Miss Berkebile and later to a Mrs. Custer, both of whom are dead. Obadiah Custer, of the Seventh Ward, and a Mrs. Rummell, living in Rosedale, are children of Mrs. Custer to her first marriage. Mr. Berkey is survived by the following children:  Mrs. Elizabeth Gordon, of near Pleasantville, Bedford County; Mrs. Aaron Shaffer and Mrs. Gillian Shaffer, of Shade Township, Somerset County; Mrs. Anderson Wertz, of No. 714 Horner street; Hiram J., of Harrisburg, Ill.; Daniel J., of near Iowa City, Ia., and Frank, of Ankeny, Ia. Mrs. Mary Pebley, another daughter, died fourteen years ago near Hooversville.

Mr. Berkey served with a hospital corps during the Civil War, his religious faith preventing him from engaging in contests on the battlefield. His funeral will be held probably on Saturday, the day and hour depending on word from the sons living in the West. The services will be held in the Big Dunkard Church in Paint Township and interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining.

Son-in-law Very Ill.

Aaron Shaffer, the son-in-law with whom the deceased made his home for the past ten years, has been in a critical condition since last Thursday, with pneumonia. Mr. Shaffer is about sixty-five years of age and it is feared that the shock of his father-in-law's death may be fatal to him.
