Notes for Phoebe LAPE:

for another use of the name Phoebe (or Philipina) from Somerset Co., see page. 39 in "Bedford County Archives" vol. 3.  Riehl family.

My old notes gave her birth date as 30 Dec 1818.  Could this have been her baptism date instead?

MISS MARY HUGHES FOUND DEAD IN BED

SEVENTH WARD WOMAN WAS DRESSING HERSELF WHEN STRICKEN WITH APOPLEXY

Miss Mary Agnes Hughes died suddenly of apoplexy this morning at the home of James Forsythe, of 742 Park avenue, Moxam, aged 55 years. Miss Hughes was stricken with paralysis about 15 years ago, but was able to be about her home until yesterday. She was stricken with apoplexy while dressing herself and was found dead in bed between 7 and 8 o'clock when her cousin, Miss Marcia Forsythe, called her for breakfast. A physician was called at once. He said death was due to apoplexy and that she had died probably about 6 o'clock.

The deceased was a daughter of Nicholas and Susan Lear Hughes and was born in Bolivar, Westmoreland County on May 18, 1864. Miss Hughes came here from Bolivar 16 years ago to make her home with her uncle, Mr. Forsythe. The funeral will take place on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and will be in charge of Rev. H.A. Bailey, pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of which Miss Hughes was a member. Burial will be made in Headrick's Cemetery.

I doubt that Nebraska endorsed gay marriages in the late 19th Century!

Need to research this further. Could "Melvin" have been a female name?

OBITUARY:  David Lear was born the 25th day of January, 1844, at Johnstown, Penn., and passed away at his home here Wednesday, August 6, being at the time of his death 69 years, 6 months and 11 days of age.  He was the second of a family of twelve children, and had six sisters and five brothers.  His parents were Samuel and Phoebe Lear.

David Lear was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca Lewis of Johnstown, Penn., the 6th day of August, 1863.  One year later, August 30, 1864, he enlisted in Company K, 211 Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.  He participated in the battles of Fort Steadman and Petersburg, and was present at Lee's surrender.  At the close of the war, Mr. Lear returned to his home at Johnstown.

In the year 1868, Mr. and Mrs. Lear and three children removed from Pennsylvania to Iowa, in which state their son Orrin was born.  Three years later the family transferred residence to Butler County, Nebraska.  Again in the fall of 1872 they moved, locating in Hamilton County.  Mr. Lear first made his home in Lone Tree, now Central City, in 1873, and lived here continuously until the date of his death.  For the period of one year, he operated as blacksmith in a local shop, at the expiration of which time he became proprietor of a shop of his own, which he has maintained through the aid of his sons to this day.

To Mr. and Mrs. Lear were born eleven children, three during their residence in Pennsylvania, one in Iowa and seven in Nebraska.  Of this number eight are living, and seven were at the funeral services.  They are:  Wm. H. Lear of Omaha, Mrs. Phoebe Perryman of Marion, Ia., Orrin O. Lear of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Chas. Soth of Alliance, and Albert D., Robert, Harvey and James.  Orrin Lear was not able to be present.

David Lear passed away on his fiftieth wedding anniversary.  The funeral services were held both from the home and the Methodist church Friday afternoon, and were conducted by Rev. W.H. Wright.  Thus terminates a life of highest integrity and usefulness.
