Death of Mrs. Rachel
McCurdy, of Seventh Avenue.
Early Tuesday morning at
her late residence, No. 1210 Seventh avenue, Mrs. Rachel McCurdy, 72 years of
age, breathed her last. Mrs. McCurdy was born in Spruce Creek valley,
Huntingdon county, on the 4th day of January, 1807. She was the widow of John
McCurdy, who died about twenty three years ago near Elizabeth furnace. Mrs.
McCurdy was the daughter of John Stewart, of Huntingdon county. She had resided
in this city for the past twelve years. She was always an upright Christian
woman and was a member of Rev. Mr. Cornelius' First Presbyterian Church,
although for four years or more, owing to a physical disability, she had been
unable to occupy her accustomed place in the sanctuary. Her last illness was
borne with the greatest patience, though her sufferings were most acute. About
an hour before her dissolution she fell into a gentle slumber from which she
never awoke, passing away quietly and easily. She was ready to go, she said,
and the day before she died she remarked that she was near to her home. Three sons
and three daughters survive her. All but one son and one daughter are married.
The three sons -- James, John and William -- are all in the employ of the
railroad company. Mrs. McCurdy was the aunt of Colonel F.B. Stewart, formerly
postmaster of this city.
