Notes for Mary REFFNER:
from Serena Mae Reffner, a photocopy of an old newspaper article on the death of Mary Simmers:

"AGED LADY BURNED TO DEATH ---- Mrs. William Simmers Loses Life When Home is Destroyed By Fire.

On Wednesday evening, February 19, [1919] Mrs. Mary Simmers was burned to death when her home near Roseland in Reade township, Cambria Co., was destroyed by fire, the result of an exploding lamp.

Mrs. Simmers, because of her advanced age, was confined to her bed on the second floor of the building.  Other members of the family who were in the building were James Reffner, Mrs. Luther Boring and two children; Geraldine and Verginia, Alice Kuhn, and the aged William Simmers.  At about 10:30 Mr. Reffner lighted two lamps; Sitting one on the kitchen table, he took the other and picking up baby Geraldine started up stairs.  Just as he got at the head of the stairs the lamp in the kitchen exploded sending a sheet of flame in all direction.  Reffner made his way out with the child, and the other members of the family also made their escape.  By this time the flames had gone up the stairway and [illegible] room where the aged lady was in bed and it was impossible to reach her.  A ladder was secured but by the time it was gotten in place at the window in the room the flames had spread so rapidly that it was impossible to get into the room and the friends were helpless.

It was with considerable difficulty that Mr. Simmers was rescued from another room it being necessary to take him out a window through which flames were bursting, and he was badly burned about the face and hands.

Neighbors were soon on the scene and assisted all they possibly could.  The remains of Mrs. Simmers was taken from the embers by John B. Craig and others, the body having been burned to a crisp.  The remains were placed in the hands of undertaker C.J. Troxell for burial.

Funeral services were held from the home [illegible] noon at two o'clock.  Rev. E.H. Patterson of the Alliance church, Coalport, officiated.  Interment was made at Glasgow.

Mary Reffner Simmers was born March 3rd, 1836, and at death was aged 82 years, 11 months and 16 days.  She was united in marriage to William Simmers on October 28th, 1859, passing through life together for almost 60 years.  To their union were born eight children, six of whom are living, viz John F. Simmers, of Juniata: W.W. of Glen [illegible]; Fred, of Ellston; Mrs. P.J. Reffner, Mrs. D.C. Reffner and Mrs. H.A. Kuhn, of near Roseland.

Mrs. Simmers had been a member of the U.B. church since early girlhood.

Mr. Simmers, [illegible] Civil War veteran, is recovering from his burns and it is thought he will recover [illegible]
