Declaration for Original Invalid Pension

Jacob Ressler, Private, Co. F, 2 Batt. Pa. Mil. Inft.
State of Pennsylvania, County of Westmoreland, 7 August 1889
Jacob Ressler, age 47, of Latrobe, Westmoreland Co. PA, was enrolled 16 June 1863 in Co. F, 2nd Regt. of Batt. of Pa. Inft. commanded by Capt. Daniel Tinkcom, and was honorably discharged at Pittsburg, Penna. on the 2nd day of Jan 1864.

His personal description: Age 47, height 5 ft. 9 in., dark complexion, dark hair, dark eyes.

That in the line of his duty at Greensprings, West Virginia, in September 1863, he contracted Fever & Ague from being exposed in a malarial district which resulted in piles, disease of stomach and liver, and abdominal viscera producing diarrhoea, and that he was treated for such by the Regimental Surgeon.

That since leaving the service he has resided in the state of Pennsylvania and his occupation has been that of a Laborer.

Act of May 11, 1912: Declaration for Pension

State of Pennsylvania, County of Westmoreland, 25 May 1912

Jacob Ressler, aged 70, a resident of Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
He had enlisted at Pittsburg, Pa. on the 16th of June 1863 as a private in Co. F, 2nd Battalion Penna. Vol. Inf., the Civil War, and was honorably discharged at Pittsburg, Pa. on 21 January 1864, and that his personal description at the time of enlistment was as follows: height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, eyes dark, hair dark, and that his occupation was that of Laborer. That he was born Sept. 13th 1840 at Blair County, Pa.

That he has resided at the following places since leaving the service: Indiana County, Westmoreland County and Blair Counties in Pennsylvania.

That he is a pensioner under certificate No. 505.887 and that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the U.S. under the provisions of the act of May 11, 1912.

27 November 1917, Mary J. Ressler, aged 69, a resident of Latrobe, whose post office address is 327 Washington Street, states that George Harker, Justice of the Peace, who performed the marriage ceremony between Jacob Ressler, her deceased husband, and herself, is dead; that there is no public or other record of her marriage, and that all witnesses who were present at Freedom, Blair County, Pennsylvania, on the 21st day of October, 1866, are also dead. She asks that testimony of other persons who have known her during her entire married life be accepted in lieu of said testimony which is impossible to secure.

17 January 1938, Martin L. Ressler, aged 69 years, resident of Derry Twp, Westmoreland Co. PA, asks for reimbursement from the accrued pension for expenses paid in the last sickness and burial of Mary Jane Ressler, who was a pensioner of the U.S. by certificate No. 848925, and who died November 17, 1937 at Derry, Pa, and was buried at McChesneytown, Westmoreland Co. Pa.

Pensioner was treated by Dr. J.W. Sillaman, Bradenville, Westmoreland Co. PA, and was also nursed by grand-daughter Mrs. J. Fred Henderson.

Mary Jane Ressler.

At the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. J. Fred Henderson, at the corner of Mentor street and Fifth Avenue, Derry, at 3:40, yesterday afternoon, occurred the death of Mrs. Mary Jane Ressler, widow of the late Jacob Ressler, a Civil War veteran, who died in April, 1917.

Mrs. Ressler, who had been bedfast for eight weeks, from the infirmities of age, was born in Blair county, on October 20, 1847, making her aged 90 years and 27 days at the time of her demise.

Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Mary Haney, of Duquesne, and Mrs. Margaret Murphy, of Latrobe, three sons: M.L. and J.C. Ressler, of Derry Township and James R. Ressler, of Jenners Cross Roads, also 20 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held from the Henderson residence on Saturday afternoon, at 2:30, with the Rev. G.M. Hartung, pastor of the Derry Methodist Church, in charge. Interment will follow in the Mechesneytown cemetery.

Paul Jacob Resslar, 87, of Kissimmee, Fla., formerly of New Alexandria, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 1988 in Kissimmee Memorial Hospital. Mr. Resslar was born Feb. 21, 1901, son of the late Martin and Anna Stutzman Resslar. He was a retired master mechanic for Operating Engineers Local 66, Pittsburgh, and a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Alexandria. Survivors include his wife Sara J. Powers Resslar; four children, Paul L., Kissimmee, Adam M., New Alexandria, John L., Utica, Mich. and Lillian Peterman, Lower Burrell; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his sister Hutoca Hill, Blairsville. Services were held Tuesday at Hunter Funeral Home, New Alexandria, Rev. Joel Wilcher officiating. Interment followed in Coles Cemetery, Derry.
