William H. Davis.

 

William H. Davis, of 232 Lincoln street, 51, Cambria plant molder of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, died at 6:55 o’clock last evening at Mercy Hospital, where he was admitted March 3, following a stroke of paralysis. He was born in Indiana County, coming to this city at an early age.

 

Mr. Davis’ wife, Kate (Ashley) Davis, died here eight years ago. He is survived by a son, William E. Davis, of Akron, O.; two daughters, Dorothy, wife of Obel Yoder, of Akron, and Catherine L. Davis, of 225 Locust street; three grandchildren, his step-father, David Hildebrand, of Ferndale; two brothers, Daniel E. Davis, of near Philadelphia, and Joseph Davis, of Ferndale, and two step-brothers, David Hildebrand and George Hildebrand, both of Ferndale. [David and George Hildebrand were actually his half-brothers - ed.]

 

The funeral will take place at 2:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Picking funeral parlors, 429 Somerset street, and will be in charge of the Rev. George H. Jones, of the Brethren Church, with interment in Grandview Cemetery. The deceased was a member of the Moxham Brethren congregation.

JOSEPH DAVIS, 60, VETERAN CARRIER OF MAIL, EXPIRES

 

Was Familiar Figure on Downtown Streets for Nearly 25 Years

 

Joseph J. Davis, 60, widely known downtown as a mail carrier for many years, died at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon at his home, 559 Vickroy Avenue, Ferndale. Mr. Davis had been ill several months, and bedfast for the past six weeks. He made his last mail delivery on July 31, concluding a service he had maintained for nearly a quarter of a century.

 

Mr. Davis has been removed to the Gocher Funeral Home, where friends may pay their respects until the funeral services at 9 o’clock Saturday morning in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Mr. Davis was a member of the Moxham congregation. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Geistown.

 

Mr. Davis was born in Latrobe on March 15, 1882, a son of Robert and Sarah (Ressler) Davis. He located here more than 40 years ago, and first worked for the old Cambria Iron Company and Johnson Steel Street Rail Company.

 

Mr. Davis was a charter member of the Ferndale Borough Volunteer Fire Company and served as president of the organization for many years. He also was a member of Branch No. 451, National Association of Letter Carriers.

 

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Cecelia B. (Keiser) Davis, and these children:  Vera May, at home; Helen, wife of Francis Freidhoff, 214 Station Street; Walter, intermarried with Ellene Koch, 559 Vickroy Avenue, and Joseph J. Davis Jr., intermarried with Josephine Cocco, 237 Market Street. A daughter died in infancy. Mr. Davis also is survived by three grandchildren and his step-father, David Hildebrand, Ferndale. A brother, Daniel Davis, Agnes Avenue, and two half-brothers, David and George Hildebrand, both of Ferndale, also survive.

FORMER JOHNSTOWN WOMAN DIES IN NORTH CAROLINA

 

Mrs. D.R. Davis, a former resident of Moxham, died at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home in Southern Pines, N.C., in her 30th year. Mrs. Davis' maiden name was Coleman, and she was a native of Cleveland, O.

 

The remains will be brought to Johnstown for interment, and are expected to arrive tomorrow. The body will be taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Davis, 232 Lincoln street, from which place the funeral will be conducted. Arrangements will be announced later.

 

Mrs. Davis was a sister-in-law of W.H. Davis, mentioned above, and is survived by her husband, her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

MRS. D.R. DAVIS DIES IN MARYLAND

 

Former Nora Bracken, Jackson Township, Expires After Operation

 

Mrs. Nora (Bracken) Davis, wife of Daniel R. Davis, former Johnstown garage proprietor, died in a hospital at Easton, Md., at 6 o'clock this morning, following an operation. The Davis residence the last few years had been on a farm near Ridgely in Maryland, and had previously been near Philadelphia.

 

The body of Mrs. Davis will be brought to Johnstown for burial. Funeral services will be held Thursday at the home of an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. William Bracken, 364 Beatrice Avenue, Oakhurst.

 

The former Nora Bracken was born on a farm in Jackson Township, between Goods Corner and Mundys Corner, about 42 years ago. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. David Bracken. Her father died about three years ago and her mother many years before.

 

Surviving Mrs. Davis are her husband and three children, Robert, Esther and Lois; her stepmother, Mrs. Christina Bracken; two brothers, Burley Bracken of Akers Street and John Bracken, residing on the old homestead; two half-brothers, Joshua, near Ebensburg and David of Mundys Corner, and a half-sister, Louise, wife of Floyd Bowman of Jackson Township.
