Notes for Elizabeth ROBERTS:

J.G. White, ed., A Twentieth Century History of Mercer County, Pennsylvania,  (The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago: 1909), p. 172

In the western part of the township [Salem Township - ed.] is an old graveyard where some of the pioneers of the township were buried, among them Elizabeth Lindsay, the devoted sister of Robert Roberts, who accompanied him to the wilderness and later married one of his fellow pioneers. What has long been known as the Bishop Roberts Spring now furnishes for the Grand View Stock Farm of William M. Chess.

[Sugar Grove Township]

Pioneers. -- The early settlement of Sugar Grove is necessarily interwoven with that of the townships from which it was formed. The reader is therefore directed for more minute particulars to the pages relating to them. William Lindsey, however, was the first settler in what is now Sugar Grove Township. In 1796 he took up a tract of 200 acres on the Little Shenango, and erected a 10 x 12 log cabin thereon. All the territory now embraced in Sugar Grove, Salem, Otter Creek and Hempfield was originally Salem Township, and the descendants of pioneers, in telling of the early settlers of this portion of Mercer County, usually speak of them as first settling in Salem. Lindsey sold his improvement to James Walker in the fall of 1797, who immediately took possession, and spent the remaining years of his life on that tract, dying February 20, 1834. Marvin Loomis, of Greenville, is the son-in-law of Walker. A daughter, Martha, was born to Mr. Walker April 27, 1798. She is believed to have been the first white child born in that part of the county.

To return to Lindsey; he married Agnes [Elizabeth - ed.], a sister of Bishop Roberts, and after selling out to Walker he settled another tract farther up the Little Shenango. He was a brother-in-law of John McGranahan, the famous hunter of that region, who was accustomed to take a sled load of skins to Pittsburgh to sell them. One of Lindsey's sons, Lewis, born May 1, 1808, is still living near Leech's corners. Lewis bought the old Bishop Roberts farm of 400 acres. It is now owned by his son-in-law, Henry D. Johnson.

History of Beaver County, Pa.; Warner, 1888

James H. Mann, dealer in boots and shoes, New Brighton, was born in Mercer County, Pa., in 1840, and is the youngest survivor of the five children of James (a farmer) and Rebecca (Lindsay) Mann.  James H. was brought up on a farm, on which he remained until eighteen years of age.  He attended public school, and studied at Mt. Union College, Ohio, for several years.  From 1864 to 1865 he served in the 6th regiment, Pa. Heavy Artillery, and coming to New Brighton in the latter year found employment for one year as bookkeeper, then served as principal of North Sewickley Soldiers' Orphan School six months; after which he established a boot and shoe business under a partnership, which was dissolved in the fall of 1873.  Mr. Mann was then elected county treasurer, and at the expiration of his term embarked in the hardware business, continuing four years.  During the next four years he was employed as bookkeeper for Sherwood Bros., manufacturers of pottery, after which he began his present business.  He married, in 1873, Sallie A., daughter of William H. Bebout, and six children were born to them, five now living:  William Horace, Robert Stanley Quay, James Howard, Earl Clifford, and an infant daughter.  Mr. Mann is a member of the I.O.O.F., the K. of P. and the A.O.U.W., and of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  In politics he is a Republican.

Last Will and Testament of Nancy Way

In the name of God, amen, I Nancy Way widow of Nicholas Way deceased, of Sewickley Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, being of sound mind, but knowing the uncertainty of human life, do make and publish this my last will and testament as follows, viz:

First:  In the recent partition of the real estate between myself and my children, it was understood that the house in which I now reside and the improvements, were to be mine and for that reason they were not included in the valuation of the five acres lot on which the house stands. This lot in the partition fell to the five single children, to wit:  Rebecca, Sophia, Maria, Agnes and Nicholas. Now my desire is that so long as any of said children remain single, they may continue to live in and occupy said house, and that said house shall not be sold so long as any of my said daughters shall remain unmarried. Although I have not the control of said house so as to make this desire legally binding upon the children who have the legal title to said house and lot, yet I wish them to consider this as my last request and one I earnestly hope they will respect.

Second:  I will and bequeath to the home missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church the s um of fifty dollars; to Rev. W.A. Passavant's Hospital fifty dollars. To the Methodist Episcopal Church of Sewickley the sum of one hundred dollars to be expended in improvements or repairs to the present church or building a new one, and the further sum of one hundred dollars to assist in building or paying for a parsonage for said Church. These several sums I direct to be paid as soon after my decease as conveniently can be.

Third:  The remainder of my estate of whatever character, after the payment of my debts I may owe, I direct to be equally divided among my children who may be living at the time of my decease, and the issue of any that may then be dead, such issue to take what their parent would have taken if then living.

Lastly, I hereby appoint my son Nicholas Way Executor of this will.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this the 29th day of March A.D. 1867.

Nancy Way {Seal}

Signed sealed published and declared as her last will and testament in our presence who at her request and in her presence have subscribed our names hereto as witnesses, March 19th, 1867.
