"As
we have incidentally mentioned before, Bishop Roberts is entitled to whatever
of honor there is attached in being the first purchaser of Ash Grove land. This
was in 1833, and the land was a large tract on both sides of the creek, and
mostly in the timber. It appears that the bishop, who owned a large farm of 900
acres in Lawrence county, Indiana, became interested in the condition of a
number of his relatives in whom the organ of acquisitiveness seemed to be sadly
deficient. This fact started many plans in his practical mind as to how to
better their condition, the plan finally settled upon being to start a colony
of the bishop's relatives in eastern Illinois. Accordingly Mr. Roberts was
constantly on the look-out for a good country in which to give them all a good
home, and while on his way from Lawrence county, Indiana, on horse-back, to the
Rock River conference, the charitable bishop, traveling along the old Lafayette
and Ottawa road, settled upon this spot as capable of being developed into a
valuable country. Hence the purchase, and the arrival of his brother and his
nephew, by marriage, in the spring of 1834, Lewis Roberts and John Nunamaker, his son-in-law. These two gentlemen were the
first pioneers of the township, settling on Sec. 28, T. 25 N., R. 13, where
immediately after their arrival they built a rough log cabin, 18 x 20, being
the first dwelling erected in the town, and on the land given to Lewis by the
bishop. This was situated just southeast of where Mr. Keath
now lives on the place known as the Wilson farm, and northeast between eight
and ten rods of Mr. Keath's barn, on the bank of the
creek and in the edge of the timber. These two sturdy pioneers came from
Lawrence county, Indiana, and lived in the house mentioned. After arranging
things around their new home, Mr. Nunamaker moved his
family into Mr. Roberts' house, while he boarded with them about a year before
bringing his own family hither. They arrived in Ash Grove April 3, 1835,
bringing with them a young man by the name of John Willoughby, who, when a
little boy, was bound out to Bishop Roberts by the overseer of the poor for
Lawrence county, Indiana. After assisting in putting in the crop that season,
young Willoughby returned to Indiana, and came again in 1838, at which time he
settled permanently. Mr. Lewis Roberts, who may be said to be the first actual
settler, was a man of extraordinary ability, which Mr. Harvey thinks was not
inferior to that of his distinguished brother, but unlike his brother was
nothing of an orator, cared little for a sermon or anything of an intellectual
character, save political discussion, of which he was passionately fond, and
which at different times made him a representative in the general assembly of
Indiana and also of Illinois, in 1838. Upon his return from the legislature Mr.
Roberts was full of Lincoln's stories, and lost no time in extolling his virtues
and his abilities. Mr. Roberts, being a man who was also a great story-teller
and a most excellent conversationalist, was capable of appreciating Mr.
Lincoln's ability as a politician and genial associate. The following anecdote
he was always pleased to relate whenever he had an audience: After a tedious morning session of the
legislature spent in the discussion of some political measure they adjourned
for dinner, Lincoln dining with his friend Roberts. No sooner had they seated
themselves at the table than the discussion was resumed, in which the honorable
member from Iroquois so far forgot himself as to reach and help himself to meat
three or four times in succession. Upon noticing this Mr. Lincoln reached and
took a piece from Mr. Roberts' plate. This attracted his attention and he
immediately demanded an explanation, asking if he intended to insult him.
Lincoln immediately and very courteously begged pardon, saying, "Excuse
me; I took yours for the meat plate." Great laughter ensued at Mr.
Roberts' expense, who soon saw what was the matter. He took a final leave of
Lincoln, whom he was used to call his "large-hearted friend," at the
adjournment of the session, never dreaming that he would ever be the martyred
president of this mighty nation. Mr. Roberts never lived to see the fruition of
his noble plans in regard to the development of a town of which he was the
father. He passed peacefully away February 2, 1848, leaving one son, Lewis, who
is a Methodist minister, now located at Peru, Indiana."

The
Cincinnati, OH "Western Christian Advocate" issue of Wednesday, 26
April 1848
February
2 - LEWIS ROBERTS, at his residence, in Ash Grove, Iroquois County, Ill., in
the sixty-eighty year of his age.
Father
Roberts was born in Frederick county, Md., October 12th, 1780. He was the son
of Robert M. and Mary Roberts, a younger brother of the late Bishop, and was
the only one of the Bishop's brothers that survived him. At the age of five
years, with his parents he left the place of his nativity and settled in
Westmoreland County, Pa., and subsequently moved to Mercer County of the same
state, in the eighteenth year of his age. It was in the county of Mercer where
he became the head of a family and embraced religion and joined the Methodist
Episcopal Church. In 1811, he left Pennsylvania, with his rising family,
expecting to proceed immediately to Indiana; but as it was about the
commencement of the last war with Great Britain, and the Indians being then
troublesome in that then territory, he stopped a few years in Kentucky, on the
banks of the Ohio River, above Cincinnati. In 1816, he emigrated to Washington
County, In.; in 1821, to Lawrence county, and in 1836, to his last earthly
residence, in Ash Grove, Iroquois county, Ill., where he finished his
pilgrimage in hope of a better home in the paradise of God. He has left a
companion in the seventy-first year of her age, and nine children to mourn; but
their loss is his infinite gain. On the evening of the 24th of January, he
called his family to his bedside, and embraced them separately, praying for
them and requesting them all to meet him in heaven. After this, he appeared to
be composed. In the morning, he appeared to be a little better. Some hopes were
now entertained by his friends, that he would recover. He continued in this
condition until the 1st of February, when his physician despaired of his
recovery. In the evening of the 1st of February, he again embraced his children
and grandchildren separately, kissing them--by this token, as he was not able
to speak, bidding them farewell for a season; and then without a struggle he
fell asleep in Jesus. Father Roberts was favored with the confidence of the
public wherever he lived, and was elevated to various offices, namely in
Washington county, In., he was justice of the peace and county commissioner in
Lawrence, justice of the peace, county commissioner, and representative several
sessions; and during his residence in Iroquois county, Ill., he represented
this county two sessions in the legislature, besides wearing out two
commissions as justice, during which time there was not a lawsuit in Ash Grove.
"Blessed are the peacemakers." Father Roberts was a firm believer in
all the fundamental doctrines of the Christian religion and subscribed heartily
to all usages of the Church of his choice. He made it a particular point to
support its institutions in a pecuniary way, and as far as his means would
permit, the Sabbath school, and missionary, and other benevolent institutions
of the day were aided. The itinerant ever shared his hospitality, while the
building of churches, and endowment of colleges, were by no means neglected. In
a word, he was liberal almost to a fault. He was a remarkable promoter of
peace, both in civil and religious society; a man punctual in the discharge of
all his legal obligations; and in imitation of his pious father, never was
either plaintiff or defendant in a law suit of his own in the course of his
life. As it regards taking an active part in the public service of religion, he
was remarkably diffident and retiring; but in private, a more devotional man I
never was acquainted with. His last illness was protracted and severe, but he
bore it with Christian patience. Being interrogated relative to his approaching
situation, he stated that death had no terrors for him, he was at peace with
all men and with his God, he fell asleep in Jesus in hope of a glorious
immortality beyond the grave.

John Nunamaker, who had lived with Mr. Roberts, moved
in the fall of 1835 to a farm given him by the bishop, on Sec. 19, upon which
he had built a house, which stood near where the farm-house of Mr. Harvey now
stands. In this house Joseph Nunamaker was born, he
being the first white person born in the town; he is now living in Iowa. A few
years after the settlement here Mr. Nunamaker and his
boys, of whom he had quite a number, engaged themselves in the manufactory of
crocks, jugs, churns and dishes of clay."

Biographical
Sketch of Lewis R. Shroyer Resident of Brown Twp.,
Washington Co., IN 1884
LEWIS R.
SHROYER, a prominent citizen of Brown Township, is a native of Iroquois County,
Ill., where he was born August 25, 1841, being the oldest of three children
born to John D. and Matilda (Roberts) Shroyer. His parents were both natives of this county
and township. After their marriage they removed to Illinois, where the former
died, and his mother returned to this State, where she lived with her parents.
Lewis received a common school education such as the schools of his day
afforded. August 2, 1862, he realized
the necessity of the preservation of our Union, and enlisted as a volunteer
private in Company A, Sixty-sixth Regiment Volunteer Infantry, where he served
for a period of three years, and was discharged in June, 1865, on account of
cessation of hostilities. He was present
at the following important engagements:
Richmond, where he received a gun-shot wound which prevented him from
serving for about three months, Resaca, Dallas, Kenesaw
Mountain, Atlanta, Bentonville, N.C.
December 21, 1865, his marriage with Lovisa Hammersly was solemnized, and to their union four children
were born: Mary E., Sarah, Emma and
Nora, all at home. October 17, 1877, Mr.
Shroyer suffered the bereavement of losing his
beloved wife. September 21, 1880, his nuptials with Martha Davison were
celebrated, and their union has been blessed with three children: Edith, John D. and Zellah. His occupation has always been farming, and
he has been quite successful; he now
owns 200 acres of improved land. When a
baby, Mr. Shroyer was christened in the Methodist
Episcopal Church. In politics he is a
stanch Republican, and he takes an active interest in the political affairs of
the community in which he lives.
