April 30, 1929.
"I attended Lloyd Shaw and his son James' funeral last week. It was one of the largest funerals I ever attended in this part of the country. There were 178 autos. You doubtless heard of Lloyd and his son James being killed at the Forsht crossing in Duncansville. It was a very sad accident. Lloyd had 34 grandchildren and the Shaw connection is large. You know he is a brother of James, our Superintendent. The services were held in the Leamersville Church and burial at Puzzletown. I sent the Straight Eight to take Lloyd's family and I took Jim and his wife with me."

Mary Ann Shaw was born on October 9, 1893 in Newry, PA, the daughter of Miles and Margaret Eller Shaw. She lived her early years on a farm near Puzzletown where she attended school. On February 11, 1913, she married William J. Hale at the Lutheran church in Duncansville, PA. Bill & Mary had 3 children, a daughter Fredda and 2 sons Clifford & Herbert. Her sons are deceased. She & Bill, who everybody called "Pappy", were married for 55 years before his death parted them in 1968. From 1968 to Nov. 1, 1993 she lived with her daughter in Altoona. Since then, both Mary & Fredda have resided at the Blair Christian Home. For most of her life, she was a member of the Newry Lutheran Church. As an adult she was a member of the True Blue Sunday school class. For the last 34 years, she has been a member of the Foot of Ten Bible Church.
The greatest joys of her life have been derived from being with family & friends, her cooking, for which she was well known, & her enduring Christian faith.
She has 8 grandchildren, 2 are deceased, 11 great-grandchildren & 7 great-great-grandchildren. Her life has spanned the most remarkable period in the history of the world. From horse & buggy, to jet planes & landing a man on the moon. Medical technology advanced from simple herbs to organ transplants. Electronic technology from simple electricity to pictures through the air & instant communications across the world. She is always grateful for expressions of congratulations on her birthdays & for personal visits to the home.

James Alexander Shaw and Nancy Ellen Burns were not legally married. They had two daughters, Frosty Irene Burns, and Kate Dirldean Burns. The girls went by their mother's maiden name: Burns. A daughter Eva appeared on the 1900 census, but I have found no further information on her. No one in my family remembers her.

Letter to Michael Scott Caldwell from Anna E. Walter
Roaring Spring Pa.
Aug. 25, 1982
Dear Michael:
Thank you for your letter. I only can tell you that James Shaw was Frostie's Father but her sister-in-law can give you a lot more information so if you come down we can take you to her place and she can tell you a lot more. She just lives here above town and she said she would be glad to tell you what she can. You see your grandmother's Grandma was my first cousin Katie Reffner. I hope this will help you. Looking to see you.
Love a cousin,
Anna E. Walter

[Note: Shortly after I received this letter I did visit Mrs. Walter who told me once again that James Alexander Shaw was Frostie and Kate's father. I don't recall visiting Frostie's sister-in-law, and I'm not sure who Mrs. Walter meant when she wrote that. Possibly one of James Shaw's son's wives. - ed.]

E-mail from Dean Helsel <grammy828@juno.com> to Michael Scott Caldwell, 31 March 2001
Dear Michael:
You also asked about James Alexander Shaw. He was my Grandfather (we were very close). He was my mothers father. He passed away in Dec. 1943. I was overseas at the time. Also you asked if the he admitted to the fact of having these daughters the answer is yes but he didn't have a real close relationship with them as far as I know. All of the children knew about them but there were some that did not accept it. I do remember when I was small of my mother going to see Kate several times. Kate looked a lot like my aunt Laura (passed away early in her marriage of cancer) they had two children 1-boy & 2 girls. Beula (Delozier) Klotz the oldest daughter. She was very young when her mother passed away didn't have much memory of what her mother looked like. Every one heard that she only had to look at Kate and she would know. Frostie looked a lot like my aunt Jennie (Feather) Shaw. You sent me a picture some time ago of James Shaw sitting on a set of steps with a grandson. That was Jennie's illegitimate son Dean Shaw. My grandfather raised him in his home. His father was a Showalter (I'm named after him).
As for pictures of them: when my parents passed away my sister gave all of the pictures back to family members. I do have one of my grandmother & father in a old probation whiskey bottle that I have had since I was about 12 years old.

The Altoona, PA "Mirror" issue of 30 August 1923, p. 20, column 1
MRS. FROSTIE IRENE REFFNER,
Wife of Michael Emory Reffner of 430 East Main street, Roaring Spring, died at the Nason hospital last evening at 5.55 o'clock. Death was caused by typhoid fever and followed a serious illness of less than a week. Mrs. Reffner complained of feeling ill for two weeks but did not become serious until last week following her return from Everett, where she attended a funeral of a relative. On Sunday evening she became unconscious and delirious and remained in this state until death ensued last evening. She was removed to the Nason hospital on Tuesday afternoon and while everything possible was done fo rher, she was beyond human aid. The sudden death of Mrs. Reffner was a distinct shock to her many friends in the borough, many of these not knowing of her serious illness. She was born on Nov. 1, 1889, at Roaring Spring and is a daughter of Mrs. Nancy Helsel of 901 Roosevelt avenue. She resided in the borough her entire life and eight years ago was married to Mr. Reffner, a Taylor township young man. They began housekeeping in the borough, Mr. Reffner being employed in the Pennsy shops at Altoona. She is survived by her husband and mother and four small children, Remis, Otha, Eugene and Elloise, all at home. Three sisters also survive, as follows: Mrs. Katie Marsden and Mrs. Vallerree Claar, both of Roaring Spring; and Mrs. Etta McGee of Hollidaysburg. She was a member of the Methodist church of Roaring Spring for many years and was also affiliated with the Winona Lodge of Rebekahs and Patriotic Order of America Camp No. 236.
