WILLIAM JAMES SMITH

 

Lifelong resident of Blair county and a son of a pioneer family, died Monday afternoon at 3.35 o'clock at his home in Newry. He was a son of Solomon and Elizabeth (Shaw) Smith and was born in the Blue Knob section on Sept. 15, 1855. He was first married to Jane Helsel, who died in October, 1907. To this union these children survive:  Harvey Smith of Roaring Spring, Mrs. Hulda Heuston of Wilmington, Del., and Mrs. Minnie Showalter of Roaring Spring, R.D. Four children, Mary, William, George and Pearl, are deceased. He was united in marriage with Ellen Claar at Newry on Feb. 9, 1911, who survives, with these step-children:  Sheldon and Chester Claar, Mrs. Nellie Ritchey and Mrs. Julia Harland, all of Altoona, and one brother Albert Smith of Pitcairn and twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Newry Lutheran church.

MILES A. ALBRIGHT

 

Of 318 Pine street, Roaring Spring, died last night at 9 o'clock in the Nason hospital. He was a son of George and Barbara (Peightel) Albright and was born in Taylor township on Oct. 2*, 1869. He was married to Mary Smith, now deceased. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Paul McIntyre of Roaring Spring, and four grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. John Emeigh of Roaring Spring and Mrs. Daniel Graybill of Roaring Spring, R.D. Mr. Albright was a retired employe of the D.M. Bare paper mill, retiring ten years ago. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren.

She was born March 6, 1890, in East Freedom, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Stine) Smith, and Sept. 9, 1910, married Robert W. Shaw, who died Oct. 25, 1976. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Anna Wilt of Allegheny Lutheran Home, Hollidaysburg. Mrs. Shaw was a member of the Hicks Memorial United Methodist Church, Duncansville. Friends will be received in the Donald E. Liebegott Funeral Home, Duncansville, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Of Box 52, Duncansville RD 5, died unexpectedly at 3:30 p.m. yesterday, Oct. 25, 1976, at his home. Mr. Shaw retired in July 1948 from the planing mill of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was born April 9, 1888, at Puzzletown, a son of Austin and Anna (Burnet) Shaw, and married Elizabeth Smith on Sept. 9, 1910, at East Freedom. Surviving are his wife and a sister and brother, Mrs. Marie Long of Birmingham, Ala., and Alvie of James Creek. Mr. Shaw was a member of the Hicks Memorial United Methodist Church, Duncansville, and Portage Lodge 220, F&AM. Friends will be received in the Donald E. Liebegott Funeral Home, Duncansville, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

MRS. MAMIE G. LINDSEY

 

Wife of Tolbert E. Lindsey of Duncansville, R.D. No. 2, died Sunday morning at 2 o'clock in the Mercy hospital where she was admitted on Jan. 14. She was a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Stine) Smith and was born at East Freedom on Oct. 16, 1899. She was united in marriage with Mr. Lindsey on June 28, 1919, at her home in Duncansville, the ceremony being performed by Rev. J.V.L. Wagner. Surviving are the husband and four sons, Eugene, Tolbert E., jr., Paul R. and Charles M., three of whom are in the armed forces. Also surviving are these brothers and sisters:  Robert J. Smith of East Freedom, Mrs. H.A. Wilt, Mrs. Robert Shaw and Mrs. B.O. Hicks, all of Duncansville. Mrs. Lindsey was a member of the Hicks Memorial Methodist church and was a graduate of the Duncansville High school and for a number of years was a teacher in the Blair county schools prior to her marriage. Friends will be received at the home after 7 o'clock this evening.

MISS ARVILLA SMITH

 

Who resided in Freedom township all her life and who had been an invalid for the past seventeen years, died Tuesday morning at 10.30 o'clock. She was the daughter of George W. and Samantha Smith, both now deceased, and was born in Freedom township on June 2, 1902. Surviving are these brothers and sisters:  Sherman, Russell, Brady and Elvin and Mrs. Lilly Bowser, all of East Freedom, Irvin and Mrs. Marie Keith of Roaring Spring, Mrs. **** Teeters of McKee and Millard of Eldorado. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock in the Newry Lutheran church and interment will be made in the Newry Lutheran cemetery.

Of Newry, died at 5.40 p.m. yesterday, Sept. 14, 1969, in Altoona Hospital, where he was admitted last Wednesday, after a brief illness. He was born at Puzzletown on March 22, 1887, a son of Lloyd and Emma (Butler) Shaw, and was twice married, first to Pearl E. Smith, who died Feb. 17, 1930, then to Mary Hoover, who died Feb. 16, 1968. Surviving are six children, Emory H., Mrs. Thelma Shaw, Mrs. Rhelda Gill and Eldon of Duncansville, Mrs. Ruth Shaw of Newry and Mrs. Mae Yardis of Pittsburgh; 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Jennie Boyer of McKee, Mrs. Anna Burket and Elmer of East Freedom, Mrs. Lillian Kunsman of HOllidaysburg and John of Duncansville. Mr. Shaw was a member of the Newry Lutheran Church. He was a retired car builder of the PRR. Friends will be received in the Liebegott Funeral Home, Duncansville, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

Thelma I. Shaw

 

Mrs. Thelma I. Shaw, 89, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, died Wednesday Aug. 29, 2001, at the home after an extended illness.

 

She was born April 16, 1912, in Newry, a daughter of the late Harry B. and Pearl E. (Smith) Shaw. She married William H. Shaw June 7, 1932, in St. Patrick's Church, Newry. He died April 9, 1997.

 

Mrs. Shaw was a life member of Newry Lutheran Church, where she was a secretary and Bible school teacher.

 

She was a 1929 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School.

 

Mrs. Shaw enjoyed life, helping people and traveling.

 

Surviving are a daughter, Joyce Woomer of Duncansville; a sister, Ruth Shaw and her husband, Amos, of Newry; and a brother, Eldon Shaw and his wife, Gertrude, of Duncansville. She was preceded in death by a brother, Emory Shaw; two sisters:  May Yardis and Rhelda Gill; and a son-in-law, Robert Woomer.

 

Arrangements are by The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery. Memorial service for Thelma will be held at the convenience of the family at Newry Lutheran Church by Pastor Barbara Love. Interment at Alto-Reste Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Newry Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer's Association.

Of 318 Pine St., Roaring Spring, died in Nason Hospital at 11 p.m. yesterday. She was born at Roaring Spring RD Feb. 24, 1898, a daughter of Miles and Mary (Smith) Albright, and married H. Paul McIntyre Feb. 15, 1917. Surviving are her husband, two sons and a daughter, Miles H. of Roaring Spring RD, Paul N. of Salem, Va., and Mrs. Phyllis Replogle of Roaring Spring, and six grandchildren. Mrs. Phyllis V. Replogle, 74, 318 Pine St., Roaring Spring, died Friday evening, March 29, 1996, at Homewood Retirement Center, Martinsburg.

 

She was born March 13, 1922, in Roaring Spring, the daughter of H. Paul and Russie (Albright0 McIntyre. She married Robert W. Replogle Dec. 5, 1944. He died Oct. 18, 1994.

 

She was a member of the Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, where she was a member of the Timothy Titus Sunday school class.

 

Mrs. Replogle was a 1940 graduate of Roaring Spring High School.

 

She enjoyed plants, gardening and her grandchildren.

 

Surviving are two sons:  Jeffrey of Martinsburg and Craig of Hollidaysburg; two daughters:  Barbara Kelley of Kendallville, Ind. and Pamela Rhodes of Roaring Spring RR; a brother, Paul of Vinton, Va.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

 

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at J. Gary Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring Spring.

He was born in Freedom Twp., on May 21, 1885, a son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Stine) Smith, and was twice married, in 1900 to Alice C. Mellott, who died in 1915, then in 1918 to Emma Heuston, who died in 1952. [See Note below - ed.] Surviving are eight children, Melvin, Elwood, Robert C. and Reuben of East Freedom, Mrs. Helen Gibboney of Altoona, Mrs. Violet Wilt of Harrisburg, Clair of Los Angeles, Calif., and Archie of Allentown; 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Robert Shaw and Mrs. Harvey Wilt of Duncansville. Mrs. Emma Shaw Smith, of Duncansville, died at her home yesterday morning at 7 o'clock, after an illness of several years of cancer. She was born in Blair county, October 24, 1882, and was aged 33 years and 11 months. She was married to Robert Smith in 1904, her maiden name being Miss Emma Shaw. Besides her husband, she is survived by the following children:  Melvin, Helen, Elwood, Violet and Clair, all at home, and by one sister, Miss Irene Shaw, of Newry. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Duncansville Methodist Episcopal church.
