JOSEPH J. SHAW IS SUDDENLY CALLED

Well Known Harness Maker Dies of Heart Trouble While Sitting at Bench In Seventeenth Street Shop.

Joseph J. Shaw, a well known horseman and harness maker, died suddenly while sitting at his bench in the shop at 900 Seventeenth street, at 5.25 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Shaw resided at 2017 Beale avenue and heart trouble was the cause of his death.

Mr. Shaw only last week formed a partnership with his brother, W. Scott Shaw, previous to which his place of business was at 1714 Union avenue for about ten years. He had been under the care of a physician for some time and had been warned against sudden exertion.

He did his first work on Monday and on returning to his home shortly after 6 o'clock he suffered a slight attack of heart ailment. He seemed as well as usual and was engaged in sewing a piece of harness when he fell to the floor in an unconscious condition. His brother was in the shop and he summoned Dr. C.E. Robinson, who arrived within a few minutes, but Mr. Shaw was dead when he arrived. Coroner W.T. Blackburn was notified but decided an inquest unnecessary.

Joseph Jordan Shaw was born in Altoona, Sept. 24, 1857, and had resided here all his life, being in the harness business for the past twenty years. He was a son of Samuel L. and Mary Shaw, both deceased. He was married Jan. 21, 1893, to Miss Clara Fellows of Tilton, N.H., at that place. Surviving are his wife and the following brothers and sisters:  James C. of Portage, John W. of Hopewell, Samuel L. of Ridgely, Md., William S. of this city, Mrs. W.E. Burkett of Allegheny and Mrs. C.B. Bumgardner and Miss Margaret, both of this city.

The funeral will be held with public services to be conducted at the late home, 2017 Beale avenue, at 2.30 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, in charge of the Rev. W. Potter VanTries, pastor of the Broad Avenue Presbyterian church. Private interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery.

FUNERAL TIME IS CHANGED

The funeral of Joseph J. Shaw, an account of whose death is given in another column of today's Altoona Mirror, will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with services at his residence, 2017 Beale avenue, instead of 2.30 o'clock as stated in the other article. Interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery. The remains can be viewed Saturday from 2 to 9 o'clock.

C.B. BAUMGARDNER EXPIRES SUDDENLY

Charles B. Baumgardner, aged 62, of 2602 Seventh avenue, a druggist in this city for the past thirty-five years, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock while on a motor trip near Stoyestown, Somerset county. Death was due to apoplexy.

Mr. and Mrs. Baumgardner left this city during the early forenoon and motored to Johnstown where they remained for luncheon. Accompanied by their driver they had started home by the way of the Lincoln highway and near Stoyestown the Altoona man was suddenly stricken. He had been in ill health recently and only yesterday morning stopped in Duncansville, while enroute to Johnstown, for some medicine, believing that he was suffering from indigestion. Mr. Baumgardner had attended church at St. Mary's yesterday morning.

Mr. Baumgardner was born in this city March 5, 1863, the son of Casper and Barbara Baumgardner and resided here all his life. He was married about thirty-two years ago to Miss Mary Shaw of this city who survives. He was in business at Eighth avenue and Seventeenth street for some thirty-five years and was among the city's best known druggists.

The Altoonan was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and was a director on the church board. In addition to the wife he is survived by two brothers, Frank of Detroit and John of Chicago. A sister, Mrs. Mary Kimmell of this city, died several years ago.

CHARLES B. BAUMGARDNER, deceased, for many years a prominent pharmacist, at 8th Avenue and 16th Street, Altoona, was born in that city on March 5, 1865. His parents were Jasper Baumgardner, a native of Switzerland, who followed the trade of stone mason, and Barbara Baumgardner, a native of Germany. Charles Baumgardner graduated from the Altoona High School, and decided to continue his education so that he might enter the pharmacy profession. Accordingly, he enrolled at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, and after receiving his degree he returned to Altoona. Here he established the drug store at 8th Avenue and 16th Street which he conducted for the remainder of his life. His death occurred on May 31, 1925, in Somerset County, and the passing of this eminent, kindly, respected citizen was mourned by his many friends and business associates.

Mr. Baumgardner was a devoted member of the Roman Catholic Church, and was professionally identified with the Blair County Retail Druggists' Association. On January 27, 1897, he married Miss Mary E. Shaw, daughter of Samuel K. Shaw, a harness manufacturer, and Mary (Wilt) Shaw, both natives of Blair County. Mr. and Mrs. Baumgardner had one son, Paul, who died in infancy. Mrs. Baumgardner lives at 2602 7th Avenue, Altoona.
