Subject: Jacob Shunk & Christina dates

Marion Keffer's data recorded Jacob Shunk & Christina (Koch) Shunk's vital stats incorrectly. or
the carving on the tombstone is incorrect. The tombstone for them is one combined stone and it reads for Jacob, "Jacob Shunk died June 27, 1877 aged 97 yrs, 3 mos, 27 days". Making his birth date 29 Feb 1780. For Christina the tombstone reads "Christina, wife of Jacob Shunk died, June 25, 1876, aged 84 yrs, 5 mos". Making her birth date as 25 Jan 1792. I have a photo of the tombstone.

ROBERT PIPER

Robert Piper, of Ligonier, a Civil war veteran and a respected resident of this town, died at his home in Ligonier on Friday, February 7, 1913 of heart disease after a lingering illness of about three years, aged 69 years, 1 month and 16 days, being born December 21, 1843. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the local Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Thos. G. Hicks. Interment in Valley cemetery. The G.A.R. funeral rite in honor of the departed soldier was held in the church after the other services owing to the cold weather and was conducted by the dead man's comrades and members of the Fort Ligonier Post. Members of Post acted as pall bearers and the members were present in a body to perform their last sad duty to a fallen comrade. Another old soldier has gone to his reward, was the regretful expression upon the lips of Mr. Piper's comrades and neighbors when the news of his death passed through this community. Mr. Piper served about two years in the Civil war, was a member of the Signal Corps. He first enlisted June 30, 1863 to serve 90 days and was discharged August 17, 1863. Second enlistment, February 2, 1864 for three years or during the war, discharged August 16, 1865, after the close of the war. He was one of the oldest members of the Methodist Episcopal church and during his long illness manifested christian patience and was bright in hope and faith. He was a life-long resident of this community, engaging in farming from early manhood until five years ago when he moved to Ligonier, retiring from active business pursuits. On September 11, 1866, he was united in marriage with Miss Kate Shunk, who survives him. Ten children were born to them, three preceded their father to the great beyond, Emily, Harry S., and Samuel J. Those surviving are George S., of Elrama, Pa.; William Edgar, of Ligonier; Emma J. Clark, of Hillsview; Benjamin F., of Mt. Pleasant; Riley M., of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; John, of Bentleyville, Pa.; Denny, of Ligonier. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren.
