Possibly the Susan STAHL (1801) found in the Descendancy Chart of Gottfried STALL (1702) & Katrina (1700).  Susan is listed as a daughter of Gottfried (Godfrey) STALL (1768-1820) & Elizabeth CABLE (1770-1840).  Susan's brother Benjamin STAHL (1804-1883) married Susanna LAPE.  The descendancy chart is from Mr. & Mrs. William R. DUDTE; 108 North Washington St.; Knob Noster, MO 65336-1248 dated 25 Feb 1995.  (This was taken from papers at the Somerset Co. Historical Society).

A.J. SHUNK DEAD

 

Expires After Residence of Nearly Fifty Years in Des Moines

 

A.J. Shunk, aged 86 years, for forty-two years a resident of Des Moines, died yesterday morning at 9:45 o'clock at his home, 606 Des Moines street.

 

Mr. Shunk was born in Somerset, Pa., on Aug. 24, 1823. He removed from Somerset to Wilmot, O., where on Aug. 5, 1847, he was married to Harriett Putnam. They removed from Wilmot to Zanesville, O., where Mr. Shunk opened a machine shop and foundry until the fall of 1868, when they came to Des Moines.

 

Mr. Shunk is survived by his wife and three children, Mrs. G.W. McNutt, Mrs. Robert Russell of Onawa, Ia., and Hiram Shunk of Davenport, Ia. Four of their children, two sons and two daughters, have died.

 

The deceased was a pattern maker by trade and has always been healthful, having worked for S. Green & Sons, founders, for more than thirty years.

 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Evangelical church, East Thirteenth street and Grand avenue.

Death of Patriarch and Veteran.

 

Francis R. Shunk was born in Somerset county, Penn., June 30, 1824, and died at the home of his son, Andrew J. Shunk, in this place, Dec. 25, 1916, aged 92 years, 5 months and 25 days. Sept. 22, 1856, he was married to Cannarissa Logan, who with four sons, William A., Francis W., Andrew J. and Oaks A., survive him. George M. passed away in infancy, and Frank L. died Oct. 1st, 1912.

 

Mr. Shunk was a veteran of the civil war, serving as a private in Col. A., 151st Reg. Ind. Vol. Inf. He was a member of Martin Post No. 216 G.A.R., taking an active interest in promoting loyalty, patriotism and good government.

 

During his long life he retained the use of his faculties to an unusual degree, and continued his activities about the home up to about a year ago. Mr. Shunk was a man of industry and frugality, unpretentious and honorable. He reared a family of sons schooled in the virtues he practiced, and who will continue the ideals of citizenship he set up.

 

The funeral was held from the house yesterday afternoon at 1:30, E.T. Scott being in charge and delivering a message of comfort to the bereaved. The burial took place in the Westville cemetery.

SHUNK:

 

Cannarissa Shunk, aged widow of Francis R. Shunk, died at 7 o'clock this morning at the home of her son, Andrew, in Westville. She had been ailing for three months, and her death may be laid to old age. She was born in Summerset Co., Pa., to Mr. and Mrs. William Logan, Oct. 4, 1829, and died at the age of 89 years. She was married Sept. 23, 1856, to Francis R. Shunk, in Westmoreland Co., Pa. Her husband died Dec. 25, 1917, a few years after the couple moved to Westville. She had been a resident of Westville for eight years, going there from a farm outside that village, where she had lived since 1861. She is survived by four children, Col. Wm. A. Shunk, Los Angeles; Frances W. Shunk, Toledo, Ohio; Andrew J. and Oakes Q. Shunk of LaPorte. One son, Frank, died at the age of 40 years, and another died at the age of three years. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 10 o'clock, from the home of Andrew J. Shunk in Westville, Rev. Scott officiating, and Weir & Ebbert in charge.

Oakes A. Shunk, age 69, of Westville, died at 8:45 o'clock this morning [clipping marked "Mar. 21, 1941"] at St. Anthony's hospital in Michigan City.

 

The son of Francis R. and Canarissa Logan Shunk, he was born in New Durham township on March 18, 1872.

 

He was married to Mildred Edgar who died in February, 1939.

 

Surviving are two brothers, Andrew Jackson Shunk of Westville, and Francis Wesley Shunk of Toledo, O.

 

He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Masons.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Haverstock funeral home, the Rev. Ralph M. Jones of Westville officiating.

Mrs. Mildred Shunk, 55, wife of Oakes A. Shunk of Westville, passed away at her home Saturday afternoon [clipping marked "2-27-1939"] shortly after 1 o'clock after an extended illness.

 

She was born in Arapahoe county, Nebraska, on Sept. 27, 1883, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Edgar. She had lived at Westville more than 15 years, coming from Mishawaka. On Nov. 4, 1923, she was married at St. Joseph, Mich., to Mr. Shunk, who survives.

 

Also surviving are a brother, Ray Edgar of Mishawaka, and two sisters, Mrs. G. Green of Geneva, Ind., and Mrs. George Chamberlin of Mishawaka.

 

Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Lowell Morris will officiate and burial will be in the Westville cemetery with L.A. Decker in charge. The remains may be viewed from this evening until the time of the service.

Benjamin F. Shunk, Westville, was born in Somerset county, Penn., Dec. 21, 1827, and is a son of Peter and Susannah Shunk, deceased, also natives of Pennsylvania. Mr. Shunk was reared on a farm, and received a common-school education. He came to this county in 1852, and March 6, 1856, was married to Miss Eliza Kritchbaum, by whom he has 4 children, namely: Francis M., Chas. W., Wm. Webster and Walter M. Four of Mr. Shunk's brothers, Peter, Francis, Jackson and Daniel, were soldiers in the late war, and all returned. Mr. S. follows farming on sec. 15.

The Westville, IN "Indicator" issue of 8 March 1907:

 

Benjamin F. Shunk died at his home in New Durham township, this county the 4th day of this month aged 82 years 2 months and 11 days. He was born in Somerset county, Pa., Dec. 21, 1825. March 6, 1855 he was married to Miss Eliza Kreichbaum of Starke county Ohio.

 

To this union was born four sons, Francis M. who was drowned in Idaho river. Charles W. who is living in Missoula, Montana; Milo W. of Butte, Montana, and Daniel W. of New Durham township. His widow, besides five brothers and four sisters survive him. Mr. Shunk permanently located in this county in 1855 and had continuously resided here until his death. He was an honest, most worthy citizen, and his death is greatly lamented.

SHUNK:

 

Eliza Shunk, wife of B.F. Shunk, deceased, died yesterday at 3 o'clock at the home of her son, D.W. Shunk, in New Durham township, at the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 27 days. Death was due to apoplexy, after an illness of 7 days. She was born in Ohio, August 6, 1835, and lived in LaPorte from 1856, when she was married to B.F. Shunk in Ohio and moved here, until the time of her death. There survive three children, all sons, C.W. Shunk, of Seattle, and D.W. and N.W. Shunk, of New Durham township. The funeral will take place Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 from the residence of D.W. Shunk with Rev. Scott officiating and Decker & Dodd in charge. Interment will be at Pin Hook.

LOGAN

 

Mrs. Lucy Logan passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.R. Ullom, 1506 Jefferson avenue, at 10:30 this morning. Mrs. Logan was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, May 20, 1828, and at the time of her death was 91 years, 4 months and 27 days old. She was united in marriage to John Logan, now deceased, April 8, 1848, and to this union five children were born, all surviving. They are Frisby Logan of Nucla, Colo., Alex of Monterey, Calif., Mary Goebeis of Santa Cruz, and Mrs. Nora Ullom, with whom she made her home. There also are five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, the latter being the children of Charles and Lucy Pagin. The deceased also leaves two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Ullom, Rev. Clarke R. Parker officiating, and interment will be in Patton cemetery. Weir & Ebbert are in charge.
